About Mark Higgins

Personal Profile

Mr Higgins has been practicing as a Consultant in Trauma & Orthopaedics at Nottingham University Hospitals since 2020. He specialises in primary and revision hip replacements, primary knee replacements and knee arthroscopy and accepts tertiary referrals for complex primary and revision hip surgery from throughout the region via the East Midlands Specialist Orthopaedic Network.

Mark offers minimally invasive hip replacement surgery via anterior approach, which is the only truly inter-muscular and inter-nervous approach, that reduces the trauma of hip replacement and can lead to a more rapid early recovery and return to mobility, work and sporting activity.

Mr Mark Higgins was a medical student in Nottingham and continued his orthopaedic training locally in the East Midlands region working in Nottingham, Derby, Chesterfield and Mansfield. He developed an interest in hip and knee arthroplasty and travelled to visit surgeons in the USA to experience day case hip and knee replacements. He completed his specialist training in the United Kingdom in 2018 before undertaking sub-specialist fellowships in primary and revision hip and knee arthroplasty in Sheffield, working with Andrew Hamer and Simon Buckley, and then in revision hip surgery in Nottingham working with Andrew Manktelow. During this time he also received a distinction in a Masters Degree in Medical Education from the University of Nottingham and continues to dedicate time to surgical training through his NHS practice and as faculty on a number of UK courses.

Hear from one of Mr Higgins' Patients

“I had my first (posterior) hip replacement surgery in 2023 with Mr Higgins. This time around, I’ve had a new anterior hip replacement and it has been a completely different experience. I’m only on Paracetamol and Ibuprofen and, already, I can lay comfortably in bed. The scaring is so much smaller and overall has been easier all around. My physio, Mark, has been so knowledgeable and my experience has been phenomenal. Not many people have experienced this procedure, and I would say I am very lucky.

Overall, I’m overwhelmed with the care and attention Mr Higgins and the nurses provide to their patients. He is exceptional and really does care about me! Nothing has been too much trouble from the start of my journey. I would highly recommend Mr Higgins and the team at The Park Hospital”.
