Personal Profile

Mr Luigi Volpini is a Consultant Otolaryngologist and Head & Neck Surgeon with subspecialist expertise in the surgical management of head and neck cancer, thyroid and parathyroid disease, salivary gland tumours, and minimally invasive transoral surgery. He holds a NHS Consultant appointment at Royal Surrey NHS Foundation Trust.

Mr Volpini graduated with distinction (110/110 cum laude) from the University of Rome “La Sapienza” and completed his specialist training in Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery before undertaking three highly competitive subspecialist fellowships:

  • Advanced Head and Neck Surgical Oncology, Guy’s Hospital London — part of the prestigious Royal College of Surgeons of England Senior Clinical Fellowship Scheme
  • Head, Neck, Thyroid and Parathyroid Surgery, Liverpool Head and Neck Centre, Aintree University Hospital
  • Head and Neck Oncologic and Microvascular Reconstructive Surgery, University of Alabama at Birmingham, United States

He holds the Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of England (FRCS ORL-HNS) and the Fellowship of the European Board of Otorhinolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery (FEBORL-HNS), and has additionally qualified under the United States Medical Licensing Examination system.

Mr Volpini’s surgical practice encompasses the full spectrum of head and neck oncology, including cancers of the oral cavity, oropharynx, larynx, hypopharynx, thyroid and parathyroid glands, salivary glands, nose and sinuses, and skin. He has extensive experience in advanced techniques including transoral robotic surgery (TORS), transoral laser microsurgery, microvascular free flap reconstruction, and skull base surgery. His additional areas of specialist interest include neurogenic and vascular tumours, radiorecurrent disease, cancers of unknown primary, airway reconstruction, and the management of facial nerve paralysis.

Before joining Royal Surrey NHS Foundation Trust, Mr Volpini led high-volume tertiary head and neck cancer services in the North West of England and served as a regional referral centre for complex thyroid surgery, including cases requiring combined cardiothoracic and head and neck surgical input. He has served as Lead Cancer Clinician for Head, Neck and Thyroid, and as an Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer at the University of Central Lancashire.

Mr Volpini is an active researcher, peer reviewer, and educator. He is a faculty member at the Liverpool Head and Neck Course and the Liverpool Transoral Laser Microsurgery Course, and has published over 25 peer-reviewed papers and contributed to internationally recognised surgical textbooks.
