About Mrs Lucy Atkinson

Personal Profile

Lucy is an experienced Musculoskeletal Physiotherapist who qualified in 1990 from the Bradford Hospitals School of Physiotherapy. She has built a long and varied career in physiotherapy, with extensive experience in both NHS and private practice settings.

Following her initial qualification, Lucy completed a Diploma in Academic and Practical Sports Physiotherapy at the Royal London Hospital. This additional training helped her develop specialist knowledge in the assessment, treatment, and rehabilitation of sports-related and musculoskeletal injuries.

Lucy has worked across a wide range of musculoskeletal physiotherapy services throughout her career. In the NHS, she held the position of Clinical Specialist within the Knee Clinic at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital, where she gained extensive experience in managing complex knee conditions and post-surgical rehabilitation.

She later moved into private practice, where she has continued to develop her expertise in musculoskeletal and sports rehabilitation, working with a diverse range of patients with both acute and long-term injuries.

Lucy has a particular interest in lower limb physiotherapy and functional rehabilitation. Her focus is on helping patients recover from injury or surgery and regain normal movement patterns, strength, and control.

She works with patients recovering from both surgical procedures and non-surgical injuries, with an emphasis on restoring optimal function and preventing re-injury.

Sports physiotherapy experience

Lucy has significant experience working in sporting environments, supporting athletes in both team and individual sports. She has worked with rugby and hockey players, gaining valuable insight into the demands of high-impact and contact sports.

More recently, she has worked with young athletes performing at a high level in disciplines such as dance and tennis. This has further developed her understanding of performance-related injuries and the importance of tailored rehabilitation programmes for younger, developing athletes.

Rehabilitation approach

Lucy’s rehabilitation philosophy is centred on restoring normal movement, improving strength, and supporting long-term physical function. She places strong emphasis on education, ensuring patients understand their condition and the steps needed for recovery.

She also prioritises self-management strategies, helping patients take an active role in their rehabilitation and long-term recovery. Her goal is to empower individuals to manage their symptoms effectively and return to the activities they enjoy with confidence.

Lucy is committed to delivering personalised, evidence-based physiotherapy care. She works closely with each patient to develop individualised treatment plans that reflect their goals, lifestyle, and stage of recovery.

Through her extensive experience in musculoskeletal and sports physiotherapy, Lucy continues to help patients improve mobility, reduce pain, and achieve long-term functional improvement.
