About Lavanya Athithan

Personal Profile

Dr Lavanya Athithan is a Consultant Cardiologist at Glenfield Hospital, University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust and an Honorary Senior Lecturer with the University of Leicester. She is experienced and well versed in dealing with all aspects of cardiology and subspecialises in Multimodality Cardiac Imaging - transthoracic echocardiography, transoesophageal echocardiography, Cardiac MRI and Cardiac CT- as well as Heart Failure. As part of her role as a heart failure doctor, she specialises in holistic, individualised patient care.

She graduated in medicine from Cardiff University being awarded numerous undergraduate awards during this time. Subsequently she was awarded Membership of the Royal College of Physicians UK whilst completed her core training across the East Midlands. She went on to complete her training in general Cardiology and completed the European Examination in General Cardiology -EEGC without delay.

She was awarded a competitive British Heart Foundation - BHF- Clinical Training Fellowship to complete her PhD in cardiac structural and functional changes in Type II diabetes with a focus on Cardiac MRI and Heart Failure. She was also awarded the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) and Royal College of Physicians (RCP Award) for outstanding leadership and contribution to NIHR Clinical Research Network Portfolio Studies.

She has presented her work both nationally and internationally and she has published widely.

She is currently the Clinical Lead for Cardiac Amyloidosis in Leicestershire and she has set up and leads a Cardio-Oncology Service across the University Hospitals of Leicester. 

She is part of the British Society for Heart Failure - BSH Education committee and the team to draw up the BSH Digital Pathway Tool. She continues to be actively involved in clinical research as an Honorary Senior Lecturer with the University of Leicester. She was recently selected on the British Cardiovascular Society (BCS) and American College of Cardiology (ACC) Advanced Imaging Fellowship with the Virginia Chapter of the ACC to undertake a specialised cardiac Imaging Fellowship in the University of Virginia and George Washington University Hospitals.

She is accredited in echocardiography - TTE , TOE, Cardiac MRI and Cardiac CT by the BSE- British Society for Echocardiography - BSE, SCMR -Society for Cardiac Magnetic Resonance and SCCT-Society for Cardiac CT respectively.

She is passionate about teaching and training and remains actively involved in research, education and specialist training.
