About Kiran Patel

Personal Profile

Professor Kiran Patel graduated from Cambridge University in 1993 and currently has several roles and responsibilities. He works as Cardiologist and Chief Medical Officer at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust, having previously been Chief Medical Officer at University Hospitals of Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust (2019-2023) and Medical Director for NHS England (West Midlands, 2013-2019). He has subspecialist interests in heart failure and device (pacemaker) therapy as well as sports cardiology. He has published over 100 papers and delivered lectures nationally and globally. He has also published 2 books on ethnicity and cardiovascular disease. He holds Honorary Professorship Chairs at both Warwick University and Coventry University. He was also previously Clinical Chair of the Coventry and Warwickshire Health and Care Partnership.

In his Medical Director role for NHS England, he led a range of work portfolios and partnerships across Health and social care which strive to deliver the challenges facing the NHS today, across organisations, professions and arms length bodies. In 2014 he was listed in the HSJ Top 100 Clinical Leaders.

He started consultant life at Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS trust and having spent only 3 years as a Consultant, was appointed as a Clinical Lead for the West Midlands Strategic Health Authority, where he developed strong partnerships between Public Health, primary care and acute care. At Sandwell he developed a prevention programme for CVD which helped to address health inequality in vulnerable groups and meet the aspirations of the NSF. He was regional Clinical Director for the QIPP (Quality, innovation, productivity and prevention) programme for the West Midlands Strategic Health Authority. He was then seconded to oversee the NHS transition as Medical Director for Primary care in West Mercia whilst and then became Associate Medical Director at Heart of England NHS Trust. He was also regional representative for the International Health Group of the Department of Health in England and is currently Chair of the West Midlands Clinical Commissioning Executive forum for specialised commissioning.

Clinical Interests

Professor Kiran Patel has expertise across the breadth of cardiology conditions but has subspecialty expertise in heart failure and device therapy, sports cardiology (he is a member of the FA expert panel for cardiology and is cardiologist to many elite football, rugby and cricket clubs across the Midlands).He also has an passion and interest in cardiovascular prevention and achieving a healthy lifestyle.
