Having graduated from the University of Sheffield in 1993, he followed graduation with posts in local hospitals and the University, with the aim from the offset to pursue a career in orthopaedic surgery. He trained on the South Yorkshire rotation and gained his Fellowship in Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgery in 2005, with entry to the Specialist Register for Orthopaedics in 2006.
He completed his training with a specialist Fellowship in Hip Surgery at Guy's & St Thomas's Hospital in London, and was appointed Consultant in October 2006, before starting a Consultant role in Barnsley in 2006. In 2010, he moved to Rotherham Hospital, where he has continued to expand his roles.
Mr Wembridge's main areas of interest are hip and knee surgery, including complex primary and revision procedures; he also undertakes arthroscopic knee surgery. He has published research on hip and foot surgery and won prizes at national and international conferences.
As well as being an NHS Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, Mr Wembridge has a very keen interest in education and training. Following roles as College Tutor and Educational and Deputy Programme Director, in 2017 he became the Training Programme Director for T&O for Yorkshire and the Humber, overseeing the training of a large group of Higher Surgical Trainees across the whole of Yorkshire. To augment this, he is an examiner for the JCIE, which administers the FRCS T&O ‘exit’ exam for trainees, and has attended every siting since being accepted as an examiner in 2017. He is also involved in question writing for the exam.
Both in Barnsley and Rotherham, Mr Wembridge has been (and still is) the Orthopaedic Undergraduate Lead for Orthopaedics, teaching regularly and examining, and has been voted Clinical Trainer of the Year for Rotherham by the medical students six times, something which he is very proud!
He is recognised by most of the major private healthcare insurers, including BUPA, AXA PPP, Aviva, Simply Health and Prudential.
Mr Wembridge is predominantly a lower limb arthroplasty surgeon specialising in hip and knee replacements, including revision surgery of both joints. Allied to this, he also undertakes related procedures, as detailed below, but believes very much that surgery should be a last resort and not the first.
It is a privilege to be a surgeon and we must respect that all patients are individuals and tailor their management accordingly.
