Background

Mr Karim Abdallah is a consultant gynaecologist in Sheffield. He specialises in diagnosis and treatment of endometriosis and pelvic pain, menstrual disorders such as heavy, painful and irregular periods, fibroids, ovarian cysts and Minimal access surgery.

Mr Abdallah had his initial training overseas at a major university teaching hospital in Cairo where he obtained his first master’s degree in obstetrics & gynaecology. He then completed his second master’s degree from Palermo University in Italy before moving to the UK.

In the UK, he had a chance to develop his interest in gynaecology and further refine his skills and experience specially related to minimal access surgery, both laparoscopic and hysteroscopic in a variety of settings including multiple District general hospitals and University teaching hospitals across the UK. This rich exposure to a variety of settings and schools of practice has been integral to his current wealth of experience across the width and depth of the specialty. Mr Abdallah reinforced his skills in minimal access surgery and the subspecialty of endometriosis by working and getting mentored by one of the most experienced surgeons within the specialty in Sheffield.

His clinical and surgical skills and experience are backed up by a diploma in minimal access surgery from the European Society of Gynaecological Endoscopy (ESGE). Additionally, he is an active member of the British and International Societies of Gynaecological Endoscopy (BSGE & ISGE).

Special Interests

He currently practices as a consultant gynaecologist and endometriosis specialist at Sheffield Endometriosis Centre, Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation trust. He specialises in the diagnosis and treatment of endometriosis and endometriosis related pelvic pain, medical and surgical treatment of endometriosis and minimal access surgery (Keyhole surgery). The scope of his practice also includes management of period problems including heavy, painful and irregular periods, medical and surgical treatment of fibroids and management of pre and postmenopausal ovarian cysts.

The surgical interventions he offers include laparoscopic diagnosis and treatment of endometriosis and dye test, laparoscopic ovarian cystectomy, laparoscopic hysterectomy, laparoscopic removal of tubes and ovaries and laparoscopic sterilization. He is also experienced in hysteroscopic diagnosis and treatment of abnormal bleeding conditions, polypectomy procedures, Insertion and removal of coils and endometrial biopsies. Open abdominal hysterectomy and open ovarian cystectomy are also one of his surgical expertise.

Teaching and Training

In addition to his clinical and surgical expertise, he is an honorary senior lecturer at The University of Sheffield and is a medical appraiser at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals. He is a recognised instructor of ALSO UK and facilitates a number of training courses for young gynaecologists to help and expand their experience in minimal access surgery and benign gynaecological conditions. Teaching and training have always been an inspiring and fruitful aspect of his career.

Research and Publications

He has led several service improvement projects over the years which have been highlighted in medical journals and published at national and international gynaecological meetings.
