About Mr Kandadai Rammohan

Personal Profile

Mr Rammohan graduated from Madras Medical College; a prestigious, 187 year old institution in India. He subsequently completed his post-graduate training in General Surgery at the same institution, which is affiliated to the Government General Hospital, currently a 2722 bedded public institution.

He obtained his FRCS (Gen Surgery) from Edinburgh in 1996, and was a Cardiothoracic trainee on the Welsh rotation with specialist thoracic surgery training in the North West. Following his FRCS in Cardiothoracic Surgery in 2008, he completed an international fellowship in Minimal Access Surgery in Canada.

M Rammohan is currently the most senior thoracic surgeon in Manchester, with over 25 years of experience in the specialty. He has been a Thoracic Surgery Consultant in post from 2011, having been appointed in June 2010 during his international fellowship.

Mr Rammohan’s passion is minimal access surgery, having resurrected the VATS lobectomy programme at Wythenshawe Hospital. Over 80% of his patients with early stage lung cancers have keyhole surgery which is also used for thymectomies, diagnostic lung and pleural disease, management of trauma and sepsis in the chest, chest wall deformities, disorders of the diaphragm and treatment of emphysema. He also has a keen interest in complex lung resections, chest wall surgery and reconstruction – often done in conjunction with other specialties for advanced cancers.

He is currently the National Audit Lead for Thoracic Surgery and was the Audit Lead for Thoracic Surgery at Wythenshawe for 7 years. His non-surgical area of interest is medical education. As the Royal College Tutor, he oversaw the core trainees at Wythenshawe and is part of the panel of question writers for the FRCS (C-Th) examination. Clinical governance, quality improvement and the medicolegal aspects of the speciality are other interests.

His leadership and management roles include:

  • Joint National Education Lead for Hospital Appointed Doctors in Cardiothoracic Surgery
  • Co-chair of the Optimal Treatment Pathway for Lung Cancer
  • GM Cancer and a member of the National Thoracic Surgical Sub Committee reporting to the Executive
  • Former President of the Cardiothoracic Section, Royal Society of Medicine

Music, dance, reading, organising and compering community events are his recreational interests, away from work.

Mr Rammohan strives to provide an excellent patient experience from first contact in clinic, through the challenging peri-operative period, through to discharge from his surgical service. His goal is to create a comfortable environment and allow the patient and their family the freedom to clarify all their doubts – thus enabling a relaxed patient journey.
