Personal Profile

Mr. Jwalant S. Mehta is a Consultant Spinal Surgeon at the Birmingham Spinal Centre at the prestigious Royal Orthopaedic Hospital. He is a part of the Spinal deformity team that deals with complex spinal problems including spinal deformities in children adolescents, adults and the elderly.

He qualified from GS Medical College in Mumbai, India in 1989, completed his Master’s in Orthopaedic Surgery from Mumbai University in 1992 and was conferred the Gold Medal for D (Orth) by the College of Physicians and Surgeons. He was on the Orthopaedic Surgery Higher Surgical training programme in the South East Thames Deanery and was conferred the MCh (Orthopaedics) from the University of Liverpool in 1998 and the FRCS (Tr and Orth) in 2001. 
 
He was a Senior Registrar in Wales and completed post CCT Spinal Surgical Fellowships in Bristol and Columbia, Missouri, USA. He has served on the faculty as a Consultant Spinal Surgeon at the Queens Medical Centre in Nottingham (2009 – 2010) and was invited to set up the Spinal Service at the ABMU Health Board in Swansea (2010 – 2013). He currently practices in Birmingham from 2013.

Besides the NHS and private practice encompassing Deformity and Degenerative conditions, he undertakes the treatment of elite and amateur sportspersons. He is a trainer for medical students from UHB and Aston University as well as trainees on the West Midlands deanery and national and international spinal fellows. He has an extensive research experience and serves on the Grant Review, Growing Spine and the Fellowship committees of the SRS. Natioanlly, he is an expert on the National Research Ethics Committee. He is a named Child Safeguarding Doctor for the ROH.

He lectures nationally and internationally and serves on steering committees of the Scoliosis Research Society. He has published widely in journals and has written chapters in Spinal Surgical texts. He serves on Editorial Boards and is a peer reviewer for Spine, European Spine Journal, Spinal deformity Journal, Bone Joint Journal, Global Spine Journal. He is a Hon Senior Lecturer at the Aston University and is actively involved with research and training undergraduate student from Birmingham Medical School, Orthopaedic trainees from the West Midlands Deanery and Spinal Surgery fellows.

His experience and surgical repertoire spans the treatment of the entire spectrum of spinal conditions including degenerative conditions of the neck and the low back and deformity of the spine in all ages.

He runs the Edgbaston Spine Clinic and consults at The Priory Hospital by appointment.
