Personal Profile

Miss Julie Kohls is a consultant trauma and orthopaedic surgeon specialising in foot and ankle conditions. Julie sees and treats all manner of foot and ankle problems, from the minor such as ingrown toe nails, to the very complex like an ankle replacement.

Miss Kohls uses the latest recognised surgical techniques to treat patients, including keyhole surgery. Where surgery is not required, Julie will provide a specialist assessment to guide her patients to recovery using physiotherapy and other treatments such as orthotics.  Julie is very enthusiastic about her field of surgery, constantly striving to improve her service as surgical instrumentation and technological advances are made.

Training and Appointment

Miss Kohls qualified in Medicine at the University of Western Ontario, Canada in 1996, and then progressed onto the orthopaedic surgery training programme at the University of Toronto. After arriving in London in 1999, Miss Kohls completed her training in orthopaedic surgery on the London North West training programme. She became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 1997 and has completed two years of Fellowship Training in foot and ankle surgery.

In addition, Miss Kohls trained in foot and ankle surgery during a year at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital in Stanmore, London, and then completed a second year as the Surrey Foot and Ankle Fellow, working at both the Royal Surrey County Hospital and Frimley Park Hospital.  Outside surgery Miss Kohls is also involved in education, and has a Masters Degree in Surgical Education from the University of Toronto.

Research and clinical interests

Julie is an active participant in junior doctor education and training, and is the Foundation Year 1 Programme Director for junior doctors at the Royal Surrey County Hospital in Guildford. She has presented and published foot and ankle research on muscle tightness and tibialis posterior tendon dysfunction, otherwise known as adult acquired flat foot.

Current Practice

Julie is committed to improving the care of diabetic patients with foot and ankle problems and co-runs specialised multi-disciplinary teams clinics at the Royal Surrey County Hospital in liaison with vascular, endocrinology, specialised nurses, and podiatry. She has presented and published foot and ankle research nationally, and has carried out over 5,000 foot and ankle procedures.  Julie offers a weekly clinic at Mount Alvernia Hospital.
