Mr Julian Foote – Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon
Mr Julian Foote is a highly experienced Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon specialising in hip and knee surgery, including total and partial joint replacement, arthroscopic (keyhole) knee procedures, and robotic‑assisted joint replacement. He provides expert, patient‑centred care at Bath Clinic and the Royal United Hospital (RUH) Bath, where his focus is always on achieving the best possible outcome for every patient.
Areas of Expertise
Mr Foote specialises in:
He is trained across fully uncemented, hybrid and fully cemented hip replacement techniques and uses modern, high‑performing implants.
Please note although he assesses soft‑tissue hip injuries, he does not surgically treat isolated soft‑tissue hip conditions
Knee Assessment
Mr Foote offers comprehensive assessment for knee pain, injury and degenerative conditions. He sees patients with a wide range of concerns - from sports injuries to trauma and chronic arthritis. When required, he arranges advanced diagnostics such as X‑rays, blood tests, CT and MRI scans, to build a complete picture of each patient’s knee health.
Younger patients with ligament or soft‑tissue injuries may be referred to specialist colleagues where appropriate, while older adults with arthritis or progressive knee symptoms can receive full assessment and treatment directly with Mr Foote.
Knee Surgery
As part of his specialist knee practice, Mr Foote performs both minimally invasive and major knee procedures. Knee arthroscopy is used to treat meniscal tears, remove loose bodies, or take biopsies via a keyhole approach that allows a quicker recovery. He also performs total knee replacement using modern Stryker components designed for long‑term durability and function.
For patients suitable for less invasive surgery, he offers partial knee replacement using the renowned Oxford system, which preserves more of the natural knee and can support a quicker recovery.
Hip Assessment
Mr Foote assesses and treats patients with hip pain from a wide range of causes. This includes younger individuals with soft‑tissue or sports‑related injuries, older adults experiencing arthritis, and patients whose previous hip replacements may be failing or causing discomfort.
A full hip assessment will include thorough clinical examination and then appropriate investigation including, X‑rays, MRI and CT imaging, ultrasound scan and blood tests where needed. He takes time to explain all findings and ensures patients understand both operative and non‑operative treatment options before making a shared decision about their care.
Hip Surgery
In hip surgery, Mr Foote provides a full spectrum of treatment options including total hip replacement using cemented, hybrid or fully uncemented techniques. His approach is tailored to each patient - for example, uncemented hip replacements are often recommended for younger, active individuals, while fully cemented implants may be more appropriate for older patients to reduce fracture risk.
He uses modern ceramic‑on‑plastic bearing surfaces and high‑quality implants from companies such as Depuy, Stryker and Corin. He operates using a contemporary posterior approach that allows excellent exposure and precision. For patients with complex hip conditions, he provides advanced surgical options.
Mr Foote provides ongoing post‑operative care until recovery is complete.
Mako Robotic‑Assisted Surgery
Mr Foote is an expert in Mako robotic‑assisted hip and knee replacement, a technique increasingly chosen by patients for its precision and personalised planning. The Mako system allows implants to be positioned with a high level of accuracy based on each patient’s unique anatomy. This technology can support quicker recovery, improve joint function and increase surgical confidence, and is becoming an important part of modern joint replacement practice.
Injections and Non‑Surgical Treatments
Many patients prefer to explore non‑surgical options before considering joint replacement, and Mr Foote offers several treatments designed to reduce pain and support joint function. Steroid injections may be used to relieve inflammation in the hip or knee, although they may not be suitable for every patient depending on age and other health factors.
He also offers Arthrosamid, a long‑lasting gel injection for knee osteoarthritis that can offer meaningful relief and delay or avoid the need for knee surgery in selected patients.
Tailored Care for Younger Patients
Younger patients often have different expectations regarding activity levels, implant longevity and preservation of joint function. Mr Foote carefully discusses these factors and will often consider uncemented implants or specialised techniques designed to last longer and support a more active lifestyle. His treatment plans are always tailored to the individual, ensuring that decisions reflect both clinical needs and personal goals.
Special Interests
Mr Foote has a particular interest in Mako robotic‑assisted hip and knee surgery and regards the technology as a significant advancement, especially in partial knee replacement.
Commitment to Excellence
Mr Foote is committed to the highest standards of orthopaedic care. He regularly attends national and international conferences to keep his practice aligned with the latest research and innovations.
He is also dedicated to the use of advanced digital planning tools as part of his surgical preparation. Every joint replacement he carries out is meticulously planned to use advanced digital templating software, Traumacad, ensuring precise alignment and optimal results.

Mr Foote graduated from the University of Wales College of Medicine and completed his early clinical training in South Wales. He went on to gain valuable international experience in Australia and Saudi Arabia before returning to the UK to pursue specialist surgical training.
