About Julia Thorpe

Personal Profile

Julia qualified with a BSc (Hons) degree from the University of Birmingham in 1995 and specialised in musculoskeletal physiotherapy.  She worked in an NHS outpatient department covering a wide range of areas including spinal pain management, chronic pain management, orthopaedic surgery and rheumatology, alongside mentoring junior staff.

In 2002, Julia moved to private practice, representing the hospital's physiotherapy service within a local GP surgery.  She works in the spinal team at Mount Alvernia, involving treating acute, chronic, post-surgical and complex spinal problems. Her specialist interest is in chronic pain management.  Julia has completed specialist training in cognitive behavioural therapy and acupuncture, and uses these skills regularly alongside exercise prescription and manual therapy to provide a complete package of care.

Julia believes patient management begins with a thorough assessment, during which she listens to the patient and discusses their specific problems, enabling a holistic approach to be adopted for individuals.  She enjoys problem solving, using her extensive clinical experience alongside the latest evidence to work out the most effective solution / treatment programme.  She believes passionately that good communication is a crucial part of this process and aims to give her patients the confidence they require to embark on their rehabilitation journey, by empowering them with the knowledge that they need to fully understand their condition.  As part of this role she has been responsible for setting up and delivering the pain education class which is for any patient suffering from chronic pain, who would benefit from a greater understanding of modern pain biology.

In 2021 Julia  helped set up a Long Covid rehabilitation service for Mount Alvernia as part of a multi-disciplinary team. She is now heavily involved in assessing these patients and providing treatment in the form of fatigue management advice and helping these patients to safely regain their previous activity levels.

Julia enjoys family life, walking the dog, playing bridge and acts as an official for the Amateur Swimming Association at galas.
