About Mr Jonathan Yates

Personal Profile

Mr. Jonathan Yates is a Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon, specialising in the treatment of the foot and ankle, with a particular interest in sports and diabetes. He graduated from the University of Leeds in 2008 and after completing his foundation training in Merseyside he pursued higher orthopaedic specialist training on the Northwest (Manchester) rotation. In 2023, he was awarded the Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of England and his certificate of completed training.

During his specialist training, Mr. Yates dedicated over 36 months exclusively to foot and ankle surgery at Wrightington, Blackburn, Lancaster, Wythenshawe, and Preston (Major Trauma Unit) hospitals. This extensive experience provided him with crucial training in managing complex injuries and degenerative diseases. He also gained valuable insights into the management of diabetic foot disease and currently serves on the diabetic foot MDT at the Royal Bolton Hospital, where he has developed several protocols and treatment pathways for the surgical management of this group of complex patients. To stay abreast of emerging treatments in reconstructive diabetic foot surgery, he attends meetings and courses at King’s College Hospital, London.

Mr. Yates is passionate about teaching and training, having taught on local and national courses through the Royal College of Surgeons of England and the British Orthopaedic Association. He has held honorary lecturer and trainer positions at both Liverpool and Manchester universities. He regularly provides instruction for registrars preparing for their consultant exams as part of their specialist training. Additionally, he is actively involved in recruitment into medicine and surgery, serving as an examiner for Liverpool University Medical School and frequently participating in interviews for both core surgical and specialist orthopaedic training.

Mr. Yates is also engaged in collaborative research, having published work in orthopaedic journals and presented his findings internationally. He is committed to governance through regular audits and patient engagement and serves as the trauma governance lead for Orthopaedics at the Royal Bolton Hospital.

Mr. Yates prides himself on prioritising patient care, believing that good patient care involves empathy, shared decision-making and integrity.

Outside of work, he enjoys spending time with his family and friends. He is married with two children.
