About Professor Jonathan Richardson
Personal Profile
Mr. Jonathan J.R. Richardson is an experienced Colorectal and General Surgeon practising in the West Midlands of England.
Mr. Richardson qualified in 2005 from the University of Birmingham Medical School with honours in surgery. After excelling as a junior doctor he was selected for an esteemed run-through surgical training position and enjoyed a broad training in surgery, gaining experience in both general surgery and sub-speciality colorectal surgery in the West Midlands.
Mr. Richardson was appointed as a Consultant Colorectal and General Surgeon at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham, University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust, in 2017. Mr. Richardson has clinical interests across the full range of colorectal and general surgery. He has a major interest in the management of colorectal cancer and the use of laparoscopic (minimally invasive / key-hole) surgical techniques. He is a high volume colorectal cancer resection surgeon with excellent patient outcomes. He also undertakes complex surgery for the management of locally advanced colorectal cancer and provides surgery for patients with complex underlying medical conditions. Mr. Richardson is a core member of the Colorectal Cancer Multidisciplinary Team and is the Clinical Lead for Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS).
Mr. Richardson has undertaken a period of research at the University of Birmingham. He was the Chief Investigator of a translational research study that successfully characterised systemic neutrophil function in patients undergoing colorectal cancer resection. He presented the results of his research internationally and was awarded the prestigious European Society for Surgical Research Best Clinical Research Award for his research presentation. Mr. Richardson was awarded an MD (post-graduate doctoral research degree) from the University of Birmingham for his thesis titled, ‘The characterisation of systemic neutrophil function in patients undergoing colorectal cancer resection and the impact of HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors on host inflammation’. His research has been published in peer-reviewed medical journals and has received multiple citations.
During surgical training, Mr. Richardson was actively involved in clinical research and was a member of the West Midlands Research Collaborative, the first surgical trainee-led research collaborative. He recruited patients to multi-centre clinical trials and international surgical audits. In his current Consultant position, Mr. Richardson is heavily involved in clinical research. He is the Principal Investigator and Co-investigator of multiple NIHR portfolio studies and is consistently one of the highest recruiters to clinical trials at University Hospitals Birmingham. In addition, Mr. Richardson has published and presented widely on a variety of colorectal and general surgical conditions contributing to the surgical academic literature.
Mr. Richardson has extensive experience in organising and delivering teaching for Medical Students, Junior Doctors and other allied health specialties. During surgical training, he formalised his teaching skills and he was awarded a Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Education (post-graduate teaching degree) from The University of Dundee. In his current Consultant position, Mr. Richardson is the Lead Undergraduate Surgical Tutor and a Senior Clinical Examiner at the University of Birmingham and he has been appointed as an Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Birmingham. Mr. Richardson is a GMC accredited Named Educational Supervisor and he provides educational supervision for Foundation Year Doctors, Specialty Trainees and Specialist Registrars. He is the Faculty Lead for the Royal College of Surgeons Basic Surgical Skills course and he is on the teaching faculty of the Royal College of Surgeons Care of the Critically Ill Surgical Patient course.
Mr. Richardson conducts outpatient clinic consultations for major and minor bowel symptoms and general surgical symptoms including:

Mr. Richardson provides a comprehensive diagnostic and therapeutic lower GI endoscopy service (colonoscopy / flexible sigmoidoscopy, polypectomy / endoscopic mucosal resection). He provides a complete laparoscopic and open surgery practice for colorectal diseases (colon cancer, rectal cancer, locally advanced colorectal cancer, anal cancer, diverticular disease, Inflammatory Bowel Disease [Ulcerative Colitis, Crohn’s Disease]). He offers a comprehensive coloproctology service for the management of haemorrhoids, anal fissure, peri-anal skin-tags, peri-anal sepsis (peri-anal abscess/fistula), natal cleft sepsis (pilonidal abscess/sinus) and rectal prolapse. Mr. Richardson also offers an expert general surgery service including the management of appendicitis, provision of diagnostic laparoscopy, hernia surgery and surgical excision of benign skin lesions.
Mr. Richardson is a well-rounded individual and he effectively balances his work schedule with his home life. He lives with his wife and five children in Sutton Coldfield in the West Midlands. He and his wife enjoy the responsibility of raising a young family and running a busy home. He enjoys an active lifestyle including walking, running and swimming. He is still committed to competitive sport and regularly plays veteran’s football and coaches junior football in the West Midlands.
