Personal Profile

Mr. Loughead is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon based in the North East of England.  He graduated from the University of Newcastle in 1998, having undertaken additional training in trauma and orthopaedics locally and in Port of Spain, Trinidad.

He completed local house jobs before joining the basic surgical training scheme in the Northern Deanery and gaining experience in a broad range of specialties including general surgery, plastic surgery and neurosurgery.

He subsequently undertook specialty training in Trauma and Orthopaedics for a further six years in the North East of England.  He has passed membership examination for both the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 2002, and went on to pass the Fellowship examination for Trauma and Orthopaedics in 2008.

He studied Biomechanics at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow and was awarded a Master of Science degree in Applied Biomechanics with Distinction in 2008.

He moved to Canada in 2009 and undertook further fellowship training in a world renowned centre of excellence for joint reconstruction in London, Ontario. Working with internationally recognised experts in their field including Dr. Bob Bourne and Dr. Steve MacDonald.  He returned to the UK in 2010 and took up a Consultant post at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Gateshead.

Mr. Loughead has a busy practice seeing patients with a broad range of hip and knee problems, encompassing sports injuries to the knee and hip through to patients who have had multiple surgery and require complex revision joint replacement.  His practice includes arthroscopic and open surgery to the hip and knee for the management of hip impingement, labral tear, together with cartilage and meniscal injury to the knee. He performs replacement (arthroplasty) surgery in large numbers both for the hip and the knee including partial knee replacement.

Mr. Loughead has developed research interests in joint replacement surgery and computer assisted surgery and has published extensively both in medical journals and surgical textbooks. Given his background interest in the subject and further training in Biomechanics he naturally incorporates computer assisted surgery and more recently Mako robotic assisted surgery into his practice. He is a firm believer that surgery must evolve to incorporate greater use of technology, which have benefits in terms of accuracy and reproducibility of surgical procedures. In particular Mako robotic assisted surgery represents the biggest step forward in joint replacement surgery for the last 20 years.

Having worked as a consultant for over ten years, Mr. Loughead has been involved in training of specialty registrars for 8 years.  He has also served as the clinical director for Trauma and Orthopaedics at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital between 2015 and 2018, before moving on to work as joint Head of Service for the Surgical division from 2018 to present.

He has worked in private practice since 2011, seeing patients with the same conditions and adopting the same approach as his NHS practice.  Fortunately private practice allows more time to focus on each individual patients problems, and also ensures that every aspect of the patients journey is managed more directly by Mr. Loughead.
