He was awarded the Certificate of Honor, World Trade Centre of New Orleans in 1997 and the Trust Board Award for Innovation and Modernisation in 2008.
He graduated from London University Guy’s Hospital Medical School in 1968 where he was awarded the Astley Cooper Studentship of the Gordon Museum. Afterwards he worked at Guy’s, the Evelina Childrens’ Hospital, St Mark’s Hospital and Great Ormond Street.
He held Lecturer appointments to the University of Hong Kong and Great Ormond Street. He was Associate Staff Surgeon in Colorectal Surgery at the Ochsner Medical Institution in New Orleans.
As a Consultant he has had a strong interest in Inflammatory Bowel Disease and has previously performed many reconstructive ileoanal pouch procedures.
He now undertakes gastro-intestinal investigations including Upper and Lower GI Endoscopy (diagnostic and therapeutic) together with treatment of anal fistulae, parastomal herniae and haemorrhoids.
As a General Surgeon he has a particular interest in hernias and pilonidal sinuses. Mr Payne has been a Member of the Court of Examiners, Royal College of Surgeons of England, Member of the Intercollegiate Board in General Surgery and an Assessor of Examiners and External Examiner to Queen’s University Belfast and to the University of Khartoum Sudan.
