Personal Profile

Miss Jean McDonald was the first Black, female Urologist in the United Kingdom and has blazed a trail for all trainees that have come after her. With over 20 years as a senior NHS Consultant in North Middlesex University Hospital, Miss McDonald’s former trainees have gone on to be leaders and renowned experts in their respective subspecialties. It is not an understatement to say Miss McDonald is your favourite urologist’s favourite urologist. 

Through her internationally renowned private practice, she specialises in female urology, urinary tract infections, kidney stones, urinary incontinence, and general urology.

A well-respected alumnus of the University of the West Indies, she started her post graduate surgical training in the Bahamas, prior to moving to London. Here she became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and subsequently completed her specialist training in General surgery and Urology, gaining her Diploma in Urology at the Institute of Urology (UCL, University of London).

Miss McDonald was appointed as a Consultant Urologist at North Middlesex University Hospital in 1995. She has served in many capacities at North Middlesex, including Clinical Lead, Deputy Chair of the Medicines Management Committee and Surgical Tutor. She pioneered a number of innovative programmes including nurse-led urodynamics, prostate clinic, erectile dysfunction clinic, and nurse-led cystoscopy unit.

In her spare time Miss McDonald regularly travels to Sub-Saharan Africa, Asia, the Middle East and the Caribbean to run workshops, share her expertise and inspire the next generation of urologists throughout the world. She is actively involved in the teaching and moulding of surgical trainees in the UK.

She is the lead clinical supervisor in North Middlesex Hospital and has previously been a member of the Board of Directors and also a member of the Nominations Committee of the Societe Internationale D´Urologie, and is a Honorary Consultant to St Luke's Healthcare, looking after the Church of England clergy.

Miss McDonald, has been awarded the 2024 British Association of Urological Surgeons (BAUS) Gold Medal, making history as the first-ever woman to achieve this prestigious honour.
