Research interests

Mr Ahmed has a particular interest in the use of robotic technology in colorectal surgery, especially for complex procedures such as rectal cancer surgery.

He has explored how robotic surgery may offer advantages in confined anatomical areas, such as the pelvis, where precision is critical. This approach may support:

  • Sphincter preservation
  • Preservation of urogenital function

He has published technical work in this area, including two “Technical Notes” in the Journal of Colorectal Disease, where he described techniques such as robotic total mesorectal excision (TME) and splenic flexure mobilisation.

Recent publications include:

  • European consensus on the standardisation of robotic total mesorectal excision for rectal cancer. November 2018, Colorectal Disease 21(3) DOI: 10.1111/codi.14502
  • Prior experience in laparoscopic rectal surgery can minimise the learning curve for robotic rectal resections: a cumulative sum analysis. October 2017 Surgical Endoscopy 31(10) DOI: 10.1007/s00464-017-5453-9
  • Robotic versus laparoscopic rectal surgery in high-risk patients.June 2017,Colorectal Disease 19(12) DOI: 10.1111/codi.13783
