About Mr Jamil Ahmed
Personal Profile
Mr Jamil Ahmed is a Consultant General and Colorectal Surgeon working at Northampton General Hospital NHS Trust in the UK. He specialises in the diagnosis and treatment of a wide range of colorectal and general surgical conditions, with a particular focus on minimally invasive techniques.
He graduated from Donetsk State Medical University in Ukraine in 2001 and completed his initial training in Pakistan. He later obtained a research degree from Hull University in 2010 and completed higher surgical training within the Wessex Deanery in the UK.
Training and experience
Mr Ahmed has developed advanced expertise in minimally invasive colorectal surgery, including laparoscopic and robotic techniques. He completed a post-CCT fellowship in advanced laparoscopic and robotic colorectal surgery with the European Academy of Robotic Colorectal Surgery (ERACS) in Lisbon, Portugal.
He performs laparoscopic colonic and rectal surgery for both cancerous and non-cancerous conditions, including:

He has explored how robotic surgery may offer advantages in confined anatomical areas, such as the pelvis, where precision is critical. This approach may support:
- Sphincter preservation
- Preservation of urogenital function
He has published technical work in this area, including two “Technical Notes” in the Journal of Colorectal Disease, where he described techniques such as robotic total mesorectal excision (TME) and splenic flexure mobilisation.
