About Mr James Stoddard

Personal Profile

Mr James Stoddard is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust with a specialist interest in knee surgery and joint preservation.

He graduated in Medicine from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne in 2002 before completing his Basic Surgical Training in the North East of England. Early in his career, he undertook a higher research degree (MD) at Imperial College London, a world-renowned centre for medical research and innovation. Working under the supervision of internationally recognised Professor of Biomechanical Engineering Andrew Amis, his research focused on knee biomechanics and surgical techniques, helping to shape his specialist interest in complex knee surgery.

In 2007, James was appointed to the South Yorkshire Higher Surgical Training Programme in Trauma and Orthopaedics. He was awarded Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of England (FRCS) in 2012 and completed his specialist orthopaedic training in 2013.

To further refine his expertise in knee surgery, James undertook two specialist fellowships. He trained in Harrogate with Mr Nick London and later in Coventry with leading knee surgeon Mr Tim Spalding, gaining extensive experience in advanced knee reconstruction and sports knee injuries.

James was appointed Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon in Sheffield in November 2014. His clinical practice focuses exclusively on conditions affecting the knee, including ligament reconstruction, arthroscopic surgery, meniscal injuries, and both partial and total knee replacement.

He has a particular interest in joint preservation surgery for younger and active patients. In recent years, James has been instrumental in developing the Sheffield Cartilage Centre, establishing a specialist service for complex cartilage and meniscal injuries. This includes advanced procedures such as Autologous Chondrocyte Implantation (ACI), Osteochondral Allograft transplantation, and Meniscal transplantation.

James remains actively involved in research and education, with multiple peer-reviewed publications and presentations at national and international conferences. His work in cartilage restoration and joint preservation has led to several national podium presentations and invitations to speak on these topics.

Through his clinical practice, research, and involvement in developing specialist services, James is committed to advancing modern knee surgery and improving outcomes for patients with both acute injuries and degenerative knee conditions.
