Mr James Crinnion qualified from Leeds University Medical School in 1987 and trained in Leeds, Sheffield and London. In 1998 he was awarded an MD thesis for vascular surgical research. He has published extensively with many original articles and book chapters. He was awarded several prizes for his research work whilst training as a surgeon. 

He was appointed as a Consultant General and Vascular surgeon in 1999 and his NHS base is at the Royal London and Whipps Cross University Hospitals.

He has developed a large NHS practice specialising in general, vascular and endocrine surgery. He participates in the on-call rota both vascular and general surgery. In his elective surgical practice, he developed particular expertise in minimal access treatment of varicose veins, laparoscopic and open hernia surgery, treatment of gallstones, thyroid and parathyroid surgery. 

In his private practice he specialises in the minimal invasive treatment of varicose veins and venous flares employing endovenous laser therapy and sclerotherapy. He has a large practice treating inguinal hernias utilising both open surgery under local anaesthesia and laparoscopic techniques. He is a very experienced thyroid and parathyroid surgeon and has performed over 800 operations. He performs parathyroid surgery using a minimal focussed approach to avoid unnecessary scarring. Mr Crinnion is experienced in treating gall stones and performing laparoscopic gall bladder surgery. He has received positive patient feedback and examples of this can be found at Doctify.co.uk. 

He also has a particular interest in surgical education and training. He has been a Royal college of Surgeons examiner since 2005 and was Chairman of the Court of Examiners of the Royal College of Surgeons and invited member of the Council of the Royal College of surgeons (2010 – 2012). He was Chairman of the Intercollegiate MRCS content review committee (2012 -2020) and a faculty member of the College of surgeons definitive trauma skills course (2005-8).  He has been on the faculty of the Whipps Cross Higher surgical course since 1999 and was Chairman of the North-East and North-Central Thames training committee for general surgery (2011 - 2018). In the latter post he was responsible for the quality of training of surgical registrars.

He was the trust clinical governance lead (2003 - 2009) in which he was responsible for improving patient safety and clinical audit. 

From 2012-2016 he was appointed as the Clinical Director for General Surgery at the newly formed Bartshealth NHS Trust. This was an amalgamation of 6 different hospitals becoming the largest NHS trust. (2012 - 2016). During this position he was the Clinical lead for 30 consultant colleagues.
