Personal Profile

Mr Gallagher qualified in Dental Surgery from Guy’s Hospital Dental School, London in 1989. He developed an interest in surgery from his time as a dental undergraduate and undertook a medical degree, qualifying from UMDS (Guys and St Thomas’ Medical School, London) in 1996. His basic surgical training was undertaken on the South Coast (Poole and Bournemouth). Higher surgical training was undertaken in Northern Ireland and Scotland. Mr Gallagher completed his higher surgical training in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in 2005 and started work as a Consultant in Northampton in 2006. He helped develop NHS OMFS Services there as well as working privately in the Three Shires Hospital. Mr Gallagher has an interest in medical education and training and clinical governance. He was the Training Programme Director for Dental Core Training in the East Midlands and since moving to Worcestershire has been appointed the education lead for OMFS training in Worcestershire. Mr Gallagher has also been the national lead for quality assurance in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery as Chair of the Clinical Effectiveness Subcommittee of the British Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons from 2012 to 2015.

Clinical Interests

Mr Gallagher is interested in all aspects of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. His main clinical interests include the management of facial pain, including temporomandibular disorders. He also has extensive experience in the management of facial trauma and deformity, including reconstruction of facial hard and soft tissue defects resulting from trauma or developmental facial skeletal disproportion. Mr Gallagher also has extensive experience in the management of patients with skin lesions, including melanomas and non-melanoma skin cancers. He was a member of the local skin cancer multidisciplinary team (MDT) in Northamptonshire and is now a member of the skin cancer MDT in Worcestershire. Mr Gallagher has expertise in reconstructing skin cancer excision defects with local skin flaps and grafts. Although there is not yet “scar-free healing” Mr Gallagher does try to minimise the appearance of scars on the face using a variety of tried and tested surgical and non-surgical techniques. He is also happy to advise and, if possible, treat patients who may need scar revisions.
