About Mr James Bedford

Personal Profile

Mr Bedford has over 15 years experience in plastic and reconstructive surgery and has been a Consultant Plastic, Reconstructive and Hand Surgeon in Manchester since 2018.

He studied Medicine in Leicester, undertook his plastic surgery training in the North West, and completed the national advanced training fellowship in Hand Surgery in Leeds. Early in his training, he was a National Institute for Health Research academic fellow in Education, and has completed Master's degrees in Education and Healthcare Leadership. He also holds the British Diploma in Hand Surgery.

Mr Bedford has a specialist practice in hand, peripheral nerve and brachial plexus surgery for children and adults, including congenital hand surgery and spasticity. He leads the Greater Manchester Peripheral Nerve Injury MDT service at Wythenshawe Hospital.

His hand surgery practice includes: Dupuytren's contracture, surgery for rheumatoid and osteoarthritis of the small joints of the hand, and nerve compression including carpal and cubical tunnel syndrome. He also treats patients with general plastic surgery problems, including skin lesions, skin cancer and complex wounds.

For hand surgery patients, Mr Bedford works closely with hand therapists based at both The Alexandra Hospital and The Highfield Hospital.

He is currently Clinical Director for the NHS Burns & Plastic Surgery Services in Manchester, and Chair of the Hand Trauma Committee for The British Society for Surgery of the Hand.

Hand & nerve surgery:

  • Peripheral nerve surgery, including brachial plexus injuries and nerve tumours
  • Spasticity of the upper limb from cerebral palsy, stroke or brain injury
  • Congenital and children's hand surgery
  • Dupuytren’s disease, including percutaneous needle fasciotomy, and surgery including revision/complex cases 
  • Nerve compression, including carpal and cubital tunnel syndrome

Skin & general plastic surgery:

  • Complex wounds
  • Vascular malformations of the limbs
  • Benign lumps, bumps, moles and skin tags 
  • Skin cancer including BCC, SCC and melanoma
