Personal Profile

Mr. Jake Foster is a Consultant General and Colorectal Surgeon. His NHS practices are based at University Hospitals Dorset and also at Swanage Hospital.

He qualified from the University of Cambridge and University College London Medical School, and was awarded the University of London Gold Medal for highest performance of all graduating doctors from London Medical Schools. He was awarded a Doctorate from Imperial College London for his research into technical performance of laparoscopic surgery and has maintained a strong clinical and academic interest in minimally invasive (keyhole) surgery.

He continues to be involved in research and regularly writes and reviews articles for eminent surgical journals. He is a passionate teacher of tomorrow’s surgeons, and has been awarded a Postgraduate Certificate of Medical Education from the University of Dundee. He was appointed as a consultant in Dorset in 2020 following a prestigious colorectal surgery fellowship at the world-leading Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre in Melbourne, Australia.

Mr. Foster is a patient-focussed surgeon who strives to give each individual bespoke advice to help them to understand treatment options for their condition. He has a broad clinical practice in general and colorectal surgery with particular expertise in laparoscopic and robotic surgery. Areas of specific clinical interest include laparoscopic and open hernia surgery, haemorrhoids, colorectal cancer and inflammatory bowel disease. Mr. Foster works closely within a number of multi-disciplinary teams.

Mr. Foster chairs the Dorset Clinical Advisory Group in colorectal cancer for the Wessex Cancer Alliance. He also is clinical lead for the lower gastro-intestinal fast track referral service at University Hospitals Dorset - directing the investigation and diagnosis of patients who have suspected bowel cancer. He is an accredited to endoscopy practitioner in colonoscopy and flexible sigmoidoscopy.
