Consultant Urological Surgeon

About Mr Jaimin Bhatt

Personal Profile

Mr Jaimin Bhatt is a Consultant Urological and Robotic Surgeon at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital, Glasgow, and Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer at the University of Glasgow. Mr Bhatt is an experienced urological surgeon whose experience spans several top centres in 3 continents.

Having completed his urology training in Oxford, he undertook a 2-year Society of Urologic Oncology Fellowship at the prestigious University of Toronto, Canada and University Health Network / Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, Toronto, reputed to be one of the top global cancer centres with one of the highest volumes of specialist cancer operations. He won several prizes and grants during his Fellowship as well as training.

Mr Bhatt is an integral part of the West of Scotland Robotic Prostatectomy service for men with prostate cancer and offers the full clinical journey from initial diagnosis including prostate biopsies, discussion of range of treatments tailored to the patient as part of a Multidisciplinary Team, surgical and non-surgical treatments including robotic surgery, and follow-up. In addition to prostate cancer, he treats patients with bladder cancer and testes cancer, and offers radical cystectomy as a main treatment for invasive bladder cancer. He has developed pathways and steps to reduce waits in cancer treatment decisions and is working closely with partners to continually improve this. He has recently been appointed as Strategic Lead for Prostate Cancer Treatment summaries for Glasgow. He is an active member of the advisory board for West of Scotland Cancer Network for Urology and has drafted several clinical management guidelines. He has also represented West of Scotland at the Scottish Government National Quality Performance Indicator review process for prostate, bladder and kidney cancers.

As a patient advocate, he works closely with various charities, including Prostate Cancer UK and Fight Bladder Cancer, of which he is a steering group member for the Scottish Group. As a son of a bladder cancer survivor, he is passionate about excellence in patient-centred care and best outcomes for his patients. He has successfully introduced a bespoke enhanced recovery programme after major cancer surgery, called ‘Getting Better Faster’, which empowers patients holistically in their own recovery. Recognising the value of every member of his team, he creates a strong circle of care around every patient and their family.

As a scholar, he has published widely, including practice-changing studies from his research in Toronto on kidney cancer, bladder cancer and prostate cancer. These have been incorporated in international guidelines. He is actively engaged in several clinical research trials in Glasgow on bladder and prostate cancer. A keen trainer and educator, he has helped in shaping the future of young trainees in UK, Canada, USA and Africa, ranging from medical students, nursing students and junior doctors. He has been involved in global urology training with colleagues in Africa, through projects of Urolink, the charitable arm of British Association of Urological Surgeons, of which he has been an active member and honorary treasurer.

Mr Bhatt treats patients with a wide range of urological problems, both cancer and benign. He has a particular interest in men’s health, including benign prostatic enlargement. His practice has also included treating women with urinary problems, as well as urinary stones.

Most recently, Mr Bhatt has begun to offer his patients the Stockholm3 test. This is an innovative diagnostic blood-based test which can be used in conjunction with a PSA test to predict the risk of prostate cancer in those aged between 45 to 74 who have no previous prostate cancer diagnosis. Mr Bhatt discusses this test as an option with his patients in clinic to assess their suitability before planning an appropriate date.

Mr Bhatt recently hosted an online patient information event on men’s health. You can register here to view this event on demand.
