Mr Jafaru Abu is a highly accomplished Consultant Gynaecological Oncology Surgeon with a distinguished reputation for advanced cancer surgery, minimally invasive gynaecology and robotic surgical innovation. His specialist practice encompasses the full spectrum of gynaecological cancers, including ovarian, uterine, cervical, vulval and vaginal malignancies, and he is widely recognised for managing highly complex cases with precision, sound clinical judgement and an unwavering focus on personalised patient care.
Following completion of his postgraduate specialist and subspecialist training in the United Kingdom, Mr Jafaru Abu developed a long-standing consultant career within a major teaching hospital environment, complemented by an established private practice. His advanced training was further strengthened by international exposure through visiting fellowship experience in leading centres in Brisbane and Sydney, Australia, where he refined his expertise in gynaecological oncology and minimally invasive surgical techniques within high-volume tertiary units
Appointed as a consultant at Nottingham University Hospitals in 2006, Mr Jafaru Abu became a key figure in the development of modern gynaecological oncology services in the region. Over more than a decade, he contributed to a transformation in surgical practice, introducing and advancing complex laparoscopic procedures for cancers of the uterus (womb) and cervix, and promoting minimally invasive approaches for appropriately selected patients. He developed a particular reputation for performing technically demanding keyhole procedures and was among the early gynaecological surgeons in the UK to adopt single-incision laparoscopic surgery, reflecting a commitment to innovation and improved recovery for patients.
A defining feature of Mr Jafaru Abu’s work is his expertise in highly specialised procedures that are not widely available. He played a pivotal role in introducing complex laparoscopic and robotic techniques into gynaecological oncology practice in Nottingham, including total laparoscopic hysterectomy for endometrial cancer and minimally invasive surgery for selected cervical cancers. He also has a strong focus on fertility-preserving treatment, offering procedures such as radical trachelectomy for women with early cervical cancer, with the aim of achieving optimal oncological outcomes while maintaining the possibility of future pregnancy.
His experience extends to some of the most demanding areas of surgical oncology, including ultra-radical cytoreductive surgery for advanced ovarian cancer. In addition, he has extensive experience in performing cytoreductive surgery combined with Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy (HIPEC), an advanced treatment modality for selected patients with advanced intra-abdominal malignancy. This highly specialised approach, delivered in carefully selected cases, aims to improve outcomes through maximal tumour clearance alongside targeted chemotherapy within the abdominal cavity. This expertise is now being brought into his practice within Circle Health Group, with plans to develop and expand HIPEC as part of a comprehensive advanced ovarian cancer service at The Park Hospital.
His contribution to ovarian cancer care has been particularly significant. At Nottingham, he established a programme for extensive cytoreductive surgery for advanced ovarian cancer, contributing to the hospital achieving recognition as an ESGO-accredited Advanced Ovarian Cancer Cytoreductive Centre. He also served as Head of Gynaecological Oncology Service and lead for the Gynaecological Cancer Multidisciplinary Team, overseeing the care of a large regional population and ensuring the highest standards of treatment. Under his leadership, the department received a Highly Commended Hospital Trust Award as Team of the Year, reflecting both clinical excellence and collaborative service delivery.
Alongside his clinical work, Mr Jafaru Abu has been deeply committed to teaching and training the next generation of specialists/subspecialists. He has trained subspecialty fellows in gynaecological oncology for many years and has held key roles in training programme leadership. His contribution extends from undergraduate medical education through to mentoring newly appointed consultants. He has also been actively involved in postgraduate teaching, serving as faculty for advanced surgical training programmes and international courses, including at IRCAD in Strasbourg, one of Europe’s leading centres for minimally invasive surgical training.
This commitment to advancing surgical practice was further demonstrated through the Nottingham Advanced Gynaecological Laparoscopy Masterclass, which he founded and led for many years. This highly regarded programme provided advanced hands-on training to consultants and senior trainees from across the UK, combining theoretical teaching with cadaveric workshops and live surgical demonstration. Through this work, he has played a significant role not only in developing his own clinical service, but also in raising standards of care nationally by equipping other surgeons with advanced minimally invasive skills.
In 2022, Mr Jafaru Abu took on an international leadership role as Director of Gynaecological Oncology and Robotic Surgery at Burjeel Medical City in Abu Dhabi. There, he led the development of a tertiary and quaternary referral service, introduced robotic surgery using the da Vinci Xi system, and expanded access to complex gynaecological cancer procedures. This experience further strengthened his expertise in integrating advanced technology into clinical practice and in developing high-performing surgical services.
What distinguishes Mr Jafaru Abu is not only his technical expertise, but also the life-changing impact of his work. His clinical practice includes fertility-preserving cancer surgery that has enabled carefully selected women with cervical cancer to go on to achieve successful pregnancies. Patient stories reflect the profound importance of these outcomes, demonstrating a consultant who understands that cancer treatment is not only about survival, but also about preserving quality of life, personal identity and future possibilities wherever it is safe to do so.
With many years of consultant experience across major cancer centres, Mr Jafaru Abu offers a rare and compelling combination of capabilities: advanced open and minimally invasive cancer surgery, robotic innovation, expertise in HIPEC and ultra-radical ovarian cancer surgery, and a proven track record in service development and surgical leadership. For patients seeking specialist private care, he provides access to cutting-edge gynaecological oncology treatment delivered with clarity, discretion and a depth of experience that inspires confidence at every stage of care.
