Dr Ioulios Palamaras is a Consultant Dermatologist and Lead Clinician for Mohs micrographic surgery at Barnet and Chase Farm NHS Trust Hospitals. He was also Honorary Mohs and Laser Consultant Surgeon at St John’s Institute of Dermatology, Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust.
Dr Palamaras qualified in Medicine and Surgery at the University of Naples Federico II in Italy in 1997 with top marks. Following completion of compulsory army service as medical officer, Dr Palamaras carried out his mandatory medical community service in Crete, Greece. Thereafter, Dr Palamaras started his specialist training in Dermatology and Venereology in Athens, Greece in 2000 and completed his training in London, UK in 2006. Dr Palamaras achieved dual-recognised specialist registration both in the UK and European Union in 2010.
Dr Palamaras is one of the few Consultants in the country that has undergone specialty training in Mohs micrographic and Laser surgery at the prominent Dermatological Surgery and Laser Unit of St John’s Institute of Dermatology in London, UK. He also trained in skin allergies at St Mary’s Hospital in London, UK as well as hair and nail disorders with the world-renowned expert Professor Antonella Tosti in Bologna, Italy.
Dr Palamaras gained his PhD in Dermatology at the Medical School of the University of Athens and has a strong academic link with the University of Hertfordshire where he is a Visiting Lecturer. He teaches regularly post-graduate doctors undertaking the MSc in Dermatology.
Dr Palamaras has had keen interest in research by publishing more than 35 scientific articles in peer-reviewed medical journals. Dr Palamaras has also authored, co-authored and edited a number of chapters in Dermatology textbooks.
As an NHS Consultant Dr Palamaras has set up two successful specialist Mohs Surgery Units, namely at Chase Farm Hospital, part of the Royal Free NHS Foundation Trust 2010 and at Queens Hospital in Romford part of the Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust since 2012. Dr Palamaras set up a specialist Hair and Nail Clinic at Barnet and Chase Farm Hospitals in 2011. In 2017, Dr Palamaras as Head of Department at the Royal Free Department of Dermatology set up a very successful Teledermatology service for the local GPs and their patients at Barnet and Enfield communities.
Dr Palamaras is a member of the British Society for Dermatological Surgery, European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology, American Academy of Dermatology, St John’s Dermatological Society and Royal Society of Medicine. He is keeping regularly up-to-date of the most recent advances in Dermatology by attending the most important and relevant to his practice dermatological courses and seminars as well as annual national and international meetings.
Dr Palamaras speaks fluently English, Greek (mother tongue) and Italian and has excellent communication skills. He has an approachable demeanour and he puts particular emphasis on maintaining the utmost respect for his patients. He always endeavours to have his patients involved and fully informed in all aspects of their care.
