In 2006, Dr. Sotiriou commenced his training in Respiratory and Internal Medicine at the University Hospital of Alexandroupoli in Northeast Greece, affiliated with the University of Thrace.
He successfully completed the national medical examinations in 2010 and was subsequently accredited as a Respiratory Consultant Physician.
Between 2010 and 2012, Dr. Sotiriou served as an Associate Investigator and researcher, contributing as a member of the investigative team at the University Hospital of Alexandroupoli.
In 2012, he completed his Master’s degree in Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics. That same year, he also earned his PhD, with his thesis focusing on the genetic aspects of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD).
Dr. Sotiriou was appointed as a Respiratory Consultant in the Intensive Care Unit at the University Hospital of Larisa (University of Thessaly, Greece) in 2012. In addition, he established a private respiratory clinic in Greece, offering comprehensive services to the community across the full spectrum of respiratory medicine.
Since 2014, he has been working full-time within the NHS as a Locum Consultant in Respiratory Medicine, managing a wide range of respiratory conditions. He has significant experience in outpatient care and patient-facing roles.
Dr. Sotiriou has published several papers in peer-reviewed journals, primarily in the areas of obstructive respiratory diseases, sleep-related breathing disorders, and interstitial lung diseases. He has also authored a publication exploring novel therapeutic avenues for smoking cessation beyond conventional treatment approaches.
His academic involvement includes teaching undergraduate medical students, with a focus on respiratory physiology and pathophysiology. He has also delivered lectures to respiratory physiologists, particularly on topics related to immunology and host-defense mechanisms.
Dr. Sotiriou is highly experienced in performing bronchoscopies (the insertion of a fine, flexible tube into the airways) and thoracoscopies (a minimally invasive procedure to examine the pleural space using a single-port entry under local anesthesia).
He has actively participated in numerous international congresses and webinars in Respiratory Medicine, organized by globally recognized societies such as the British Thoracic Society and the European Respiratory Society.
Within the NHS, he has led clinical audits aimed at improving the quality of healthcare services. He has also co-organized and facilitated practical sessions on thoracic ultrasound, a key diagnostic tool for imaging the pleura and lungs.
Dr. Sotiriou has developed extensive knowledge and experience across both clinical and academic domains. His years of medical practice have significantly enhanced his skills, ensuring a high level of accuracy and competency in patient care.
