Personal Profile

Mr Gurbinder Nandhara has a specialist interest in Foot and Ankle Surgery. He trained in the North West and went on to do further training at East Lancashire foot and ankle unit to learn further skills in complex foot and ankle pathology. His training involved both elective and trauma surgery, and for the final few years he concentrated on foot and ankle problems and their treatments.

He deals will all aspects of foot and ankle problems. These include ankle arthritis and instability, bunions, heel pain, arthritis, ligament injuries and cartilage defects. He consults on flat foot and high arch issues and problems with tendons. He has a particular interest in plantar fasciitis and can offer treatment for those who have had no improvement with physiotherapy. He can offer alternative treatments in the form of shockwave therapy and a novel muscle release operation to alleviate pain.

He is happy to see patients with foot problems due to diabetes and rheumatoid arthritis and can offer pain relieving and deformity correcting operations to help with mobility.

Mr Nandhara also consults on sports related injuries to the foot and ankle for instability or recurrent pain after an ankle sprain or pain across the foot and heel during or after sports.

For those with big toe joint arthritis and want to preserve movement in the toe he can offer CARTIVA.  This is a new implant for the big toe which may allow more movement and avoid a fusion.

Many of his procedures are now done arthroscopically (key hole) and don’t require big incisions. This helps with post operative healing and rehabilitation.

Mr Nandhara has over eight years' experience as a substantive consultant and has a regular NHS practice at the George Eliot Hospital in Nuneaton. In his NHS role, he has previously been the Clinical Lead for Trauma and Orthopaedics.  He regularly teaches students and senior surgeons wanting to learn about foot and ankle examination, diagnosis and treatment. Since his arrival at The George Eliot Hospital he has helped shape the future of Foot and Ankle Surgery at the hospital. He has now built a comprehensive department treating all aspects of Foot and Ankle problems.

He takes part in regular audit work and review of practice. He stays up to date with attendance at national and international meetings.  He maintains a professional attitude and has an annual mandatory appraisal which reviews his practice for the year.

Mr Nandhara has also given opinions on medico-legal issues regarding treatment for foot and ankle problems.  He has also been a member of the General Medical Council Fitness to Practice Commitee.
