About Dr Gulamabbas Khakoo

Personal Profile

Personal Profile

Gulamabbas Khakoo is an experienced consultant of more than 25 years in General Paediatrics, treating all general medical problems in children, both in an emergency setting as well as a clinic / outpatient setting. He also has over 20 years as a consultant in NW London treating children with allergies, including immediate and delayed food allergy, and suspected skin allergies such as eczema and urticaria (hives). Making a clinical diagnosis is supported by skin prick testing which can often be done on the same day, and where necessary on site blood tests. He values the importance of a professionally conducted consultation with clear explanation, supported by an excellent patient experience and effective communication. Over 80% of his consultations need a single visit, minimising the number of follow up attendances.

He is a consultant in the Department of Paediatric Allergy and Asthma at St Mary’s Hospital, Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, which is a specialist referral centre for children with allergies, as well as his general, newborn and allergy service at the Hillingdon Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, where for a number of years he was head of department. Being a part of specialist societies such as the British Society of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, as well as weekly London multi-professional clinical networks in childhood allergy allows him to keep up to date with the medical evidence for the diagnosis and treatment of allergies in children.

He has written book chapters and published in peer reviewed journals on food allergies and skin allergies in children. For over 25 years he has lectured nationally and internationally on breathing problems and food allergies in children.

Professor Khakoo completed his medical student training at Cambridge and Oxford Universities. After qualifying he worked in many specialist children hospitals in Manchester, Southampton and Leicester, and later in his training the major allergy and respiratory centres in NW London including the Royal Brompton Hospital and St Mary’s Hospital (part of Imperial College Healthcare).

He has a passion for teaching and education, and has a professorial role as the Director of Clinical Affairs for the newly established Brunel Medical School at Brunel University, Middlesex. He is a senior examiner for the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (RCPCH).

Professor Khakoo has a passion for high quality, patient-centred care, and gets excellent feedback for patient experience. He is a doctor with high ranking clinical management posts, and has held posts as an executive Medical Director, and as Clinical Director of Paediatrics for NHS England (London Region).
