About Mr Grey Giddins

Personal Profile

Grey Giddins is a consultant Orthopaedic surgeon specialising in elbow, wrist and hand problems and nerve injuries. He has been a consultant in Bath for 18 years. He held a research fellowship from the Royal College of Surgeons prior to his appointment in 1995 as a Consultant Orthopaedic and Hand Surgeon at the Royal United Hospital and Royal National Hospital for Rheumatic Diseases in Bath. He was awarded an ABC travelling fellowship in the USA in 2000.

He treats a full range of problems in the elbow, wrist and hand including carpal tunnel and cubital tunnel syndrome, Dupuytren's disease, ganglions, arthritis and all aspects of hand care in all age groups. He has particular interests in the management of common hand injuries, the mechanism and outcome of falls on the wrist, and minimal access surgery for many common elective hand conditions such as finger ganglia, corrective osteotomies and closed fusions. He runs a specialist practice in adult and obstetric brachial plexus injuries, wrist and pathology and rheumatoid arthritis.

As well as being an extremely experienced doctor, he is also the Editor of the Journal of Hand surgery and a member of the Councils of both the British Society for Surgery of the Hand, the European combined societies for Surgery of the Hand and the British Orthopaedic Association. He runs a busy research programme both at the Royal United hospital in Bath and the University of Bath.

Professor Giddins has a particular philosophy of minimising the need for surgery. When surgery is needed he has developed new treatments under local anaesthetic to avoid the problems of general anaesthesia. He has also pioneered a number of keyhole surgery techniques. He is very experienced in giving injections and has a published DVD on how to inject in the whole of the upper limb.

Professor Giddins is married to Jane, who is an author. They have 3 adult children, one of whom is studying medicine. He cycles almost everywhere including occasional stages of the Tour de France, and plays tennis and golf.
