About Mr Graeme Hancock

Personal Profile

Mr Hancock is a Consultant in Knee Surgery at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals. His practice includes all aspects of knee surgery, with a special interest in knee preservation, having completed a complex Osteotomy Fellowship, and providing knee cartilage repair/regeneration services in the NHS, which is provided by only a handful of UK centres. Offering a full scope of knee surgery, Mr Hancock aims to provide a personalised service for patients, depending upon the individual’s needs and aspirations.

Mr Hancock is originally from the North East, and graduated from Sheffield University Medical School in 2010. All of Mr Hancock’s specialty training was undertaken in South Yorkshire, where he completed the MRCS examination, before entering core surgical training, and the FRCS(Tr&Orth) examination in 2020. He was a specialty registrar on the South Yorkshire rotation, completing numerous research and service development projects whilst in training. As a result, he has a number of publications in international journals and has presented at national and international conferences.

He completed specialty training and achieved his Certificate of Completion of Training in October 2021, and went on to gain further knee surgery experience as the Sheffield Knee Fellow under the guidance of Mr Paul Sutton, Mr Jeremy Brown and Mr James Stoddard, with specific experience in ligament reconstruction surgery, management of patellofemoral instability, and cartilage surgery. Following this, he completed a second fellowship with specific focus on complex osteotomy, as the final fellow of Mr Matt Dawson. Mr Dawson is the ex-co chair of the ESSKA (European) Osteotomy Group, and a leading international authority on knee osteotomy. Mr Hancock gained experience in performing individualised knee osteotomy for patients in order to avoid knee replacement and remain fully active, as well as complex osteotomy for management of ligament and/or rotational problems.

Having completed these fellowships, Mr Hancock was appointed as a Consultant in Knee Surgery at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals, commencing this post in April 2023. Here, he has begun a modern osteotomy practice, and monitors patient outcomes closely using Patient Reported Outcome Measures, utilising national registries for ligament reconstruction and osteotomy. Alongside these procedures, he is focused on knee preservation, aiming to repair meniscal injuries wherever possible to retain their function.

He is a Clinical Supervisor to junior doctors, provides training to specialty registrars and supervises a Senior Knee Fellowship along with colleagues at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals. He has also provided peer-review of internationally submitted articles for KSSTA, JAJS, and JKS journals.

In his spare time, Mr Hancock is a keen golfer and a member at Abbeydale Golf Club.
