He also runs NHS outpatient clinics at West Berks Community Hospital. He is a Fellow of both Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh and Royal College of Physicians London.
Dr MacDonald is known for a patient-centred approach, taking time to understand each person’s symptoms, day-to-day priorities and goals. Consultations focus on clear explanations and shared decision-making, so patients feel confident about their diagnosis and treatment plan.
He covers the full range of general rheumatology, including inflammatory arthritis, connective tissue disease, crystal arthritis (gout), polymyalgia rheumatica and musculoskeletal pain syndromes.
Dr MacDonald also has a specialist interest in osteoporosis and bone health. This expertise underpins his role as Clinical Lead for the Fracture Liaison Service at Royal Berkshire Hospital, supporting best-practice assessment and prevention of further fractures after an initial fragility fracture.
A major focus of Dr MacDonald’s career is medical education and supporting doctors in training. He has completed a postgraduate certificate in medical education (with distinction) from Cardiff University. He holds the role of Associate Clinical Sub Dean, overseeing undergraduate placements for students from University of Southampton. He is currently Training Programme Director for Rheumatology in the Oxford/Thames Valley Deanery. He is an Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer at Southampton.
Dr MacDonald is experienced in postgraduate assessment and standards. He has previously contributed as a question writer for the MRCP part 1 and part 2 written examinations. He has also served on the exam board for the Rheumatology Specialist Certificate Examination. He is an examiner for the MRCP PACES clinical examination and has organised the examination at Royal Berkshire Hospital since 2016.
