She was appointed the Royal College of Surgeons surgical tutor at Wexham Park Frimley Health NHS Trust from 2015-2020. She is currently the enhanced recovery lead, surgical lead for physician associates from the University of London and Reading University.
She is also the Training Program Director for the Oxford Deanery core trainees in surgery from 2021 and is responsible for more than 50 trainee surgeons improving quality in training, part of policy making in post graduate surgical examinations and organising the training program according to professional standards and GMC aligned curriculum.
She was appointed consultant in 2012 and is an expert in minimally invasive surgery and specialises in colorectal cancer resections (laparoscopic and open), proctology, pelvic floor disorders and colonoscopy. She is currently undergoing robotic training.
Ms Salerno grew up in London and studied medicine at St Mary's medical school. Imperial College London. She was awarded a doctorate (MD) from the University of London for her thesis in low rectal cancer with the Royal Marsden Hospital and Prof Bill Heald at Basingstoke. Her specialist surgical training was completed in the London Deanery including at St George's Hospital, Frimley Park and the Royal Surrey Hospitals. She spent one year studying pelvic floor disorders and intestinal failure surgery at UCLH and St Thomas' Hospitals in London. She also has a post graduate degree in education from Cardiff University (PG Cert Ed).
Ms Salerno is a high volume surgeon with expertise in all aspects of colorectal disease, hernia repair and colonoscopy. Her focus is on achieving the best clinical outcomes and excellent results for patients. She is an international conference speaker with over 50 articles and book chapters mainly published on rectal cancer. Ms Salerno was voted best medical educator in 2020 at Wexham Park Frimley Health NHS Trust.
