Mr Gerald Collins is a graduate of University College Cork, Ireland, and trained in General Surgery in England and Scotland before specialising in Urology. His MD Research was conducted with Edinburgh University and The Mayo Clinic, Rochester, USA. This examined the prevalence and characteristics of BPH (Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia) in the community to vastly improve our understanding of this common condition.
His specialist interests are in Uro-Oncology, with particular reference to prostate cancer. Mr Collins has initiated a programme on optimising bone health in prostate cancer patients, especially those on or about to start hormone treatment. He has continued his research interests throughout his career and continues to publish on a regular basis.
He has expertise in prostate cancer diagnostics, namely the interpretation of PSA (Prostate-Specific Antigen) and free PSA levels and the indications for and interpretation of prostate MR scanning. He also uses the Stockholm3 risk calculator for prostate cancer - this simple blood test assesses PSA, PSA derivatives and generic markers.
Mr Collins has a special interest in bone health assessment and management, particularly in men on hormone treatment for prostate cancer. Gerald has also undertaken training in medico-legal practice and offers medico-legal expertise and reports in prostate and other cancer diagnosis and management as well as general and acute urology.
