Dr George Coltart is a Consultant Dermatologist with specialist expertise in skin cancer and adult medical dermatology. He holds a substantive NHS post at University Hospital Southampton (UHS) NHS Foundation Trust, where he provides care for patients with a broad spectrum of dermatological conditions, including eczema, psoriasis, acne, urticaria, and autoimmune and autoinflammatory skin disorders. He is highly experienced in the surgical treatment of skin cancers and benign skin lesions and is a member of the skin cancer multidisciplinary team (MDT) at the UHS NHS Foundation Trust.
Dr Coltart completed his medical education at the University of Oxford, where he also undertook an intercalated degree in Physiological Sciences. He was subsequently awarded an NIHR Academic Clinical Fellowship to pursue dermatology training in Southampton and is currently undertaking a PhD supported by a prestigious Medical Research Council Clinical Research Training Fellowship. His research focuses on tumour immunology and skin cancer biology, and he has pioneered an award-winning innovative tissue culture system that models tumour responses to immunotherapy.
Alongside his core research, Dr Coltart has contributed to several other areas of dermatological investigation, including methods to reduce patient anxiety during dermatological surgery, long-term cancer risks associated with narrow-band UVB phototherapy, early intervention for pre-malignant skin changes, and the use of artificial intelligence in inflammatory skin disease classification. He has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications and has presented his research at leading national and international conferences.
Dr Coltart is also committed to medical education. He holds a Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Education from University College London and the Royal College of Physicians, and is actively involved in the teaching and supervision of medical students, junior doctors, and nursing staff.
