About Mr George Fowlis
Personal Profile
Mr Fowlis obtained a Batchelor of Science - BSc(Hons) undergraduate degree from Yale University, USA in 1979 and his Batchelor of Medicine, Batchelor of Surgery, and Batchelor of the art of Obstetrics - MB BCh BAO primary medical degree from University College Dublin, qualifying in 1984. He then trained in general surgery and urology in London obtaining professional qualifications of Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England - FRCS(Eng), Intercollegiate Fellowship in Urology - FRCS(Urol) and Fellowship of the European Board of Urology - FEBU.
He also obtained the higher medical degree of Doctor of Medicine - MD through scientific research on tumour antigens and publication of a thesis. His research was carried out at the prestigious Medical Research Council (MRC) Clinical Research Centre (CRC) then based at Northwick Park Hospital in Harrow, Middlesex.
During his training he presented widely at International Meetings and won several competitive awards including a National Kidney Research Fund (NKRF) Grant, a Medical Research Council (MRC) Training Fellowship, the Shackman Travelling Fellowship to the Cleveland Clinic, USA and a British Urological Foundation (BUF) Fellowship to Vanderbilt University, USA.
Mr Fowlis has been in medical practice for 37 years, with over 24 years’ experience as a Consultant Urological Surgeon. His first 27 years of practice were spent in the National Health Service (NHS), where he worked for 15 years as a Consultant. For the last 9 years he has been in full-time Independent Urology Practice, and his practice encompasses all aspects of general urology, with sub-speciality interests in oncology and stone disease.
Mr Fowlis was a recognised Royal of College of Surgeons of England (RCSEng) trainer while an NHS Consultant and was clinical lead for Oncology and Paediatrics at his NHS Trust. He is an Honorary Consulting Urological Surgeon at the Edward Francis Small Teaching Hospital (EFSTH) in The Gambia and an examiner for medical students at the University of the Gambia (UTG) Medical School. He has been carrying out charity work on behalf of the Societe International d’Urologie (SIU), the British Association of Urological Surgeons (BAUS) and the West African College of Surgeons (WACS) all over West Africa since he was appointed a consultant in 1996. He was a Committee Member of the BAUS Urology Overseas Link (UROLINK) for many years and initiated strong links with urology departments in Banjul, The Gambia; Dakar, Senegal; and Ibadan, Lagos & Benin City in Nigeria.
Mr Fowlis has been married for 34 years to a non-medic, which helps in keeping work separate from home interests, and has 2 grown-up daughters working in New York and London. His interests outside medicine include jazz music – especially the cool jazz of Miles Davis & John Coltrane; wine tasting & collection and charity work to improve health and science in Africa. He has been a board member of the charities Health The Gambia (HTG), Africa Research Excellence Fund (AREF) and Ida Bass Kidney Foundation (IBKF).
Clinical Interests
Mr Fowlis has clinical interests in Prostate Cancer and is involved with research on prostate cancer in African men with the Edward Francis Small Teaching Hospital in Banjul, Gambia & University Cheikh Anta Diop in Dakar, Senegal. He has also developed expertise in management of Complex Obstetric Fistulae from his charity work in West Africa.
Mr Fowlis tailors treatment to each patient individually, making sure they are involved in all aspects of their management from investigations to choice of treatment options, actual treatment and follow up care. Mr Fowlis endeavours to go the extra mile to ensure every patient fully understands their presenting condition and its management. He gets patients involved in all the decision making processes pertaining to their care and is always available to deal with their queries.
