Mr Stranks was appointed as a general orthopaedic and trauma surgeon at Basingstoke and North Hampshire hospital, now Hampshire Hospital’s NHS trust in 1995.

He qualified 1983 from St George’s Hospital medical School having obtained a BSC in science and anatomy in 1980. He obtained his FRCS in 1988 and his FRCS Orth and certificate of orthopaedic European specialist training in 1995 having trained on the Wessex Orthopaedic rotation which included Queen Alexandra Hospital in Portsmouth Lord Mayor Treloar Hospital and Southampton University Hospital.

Throughout his career Mr Stranks has had an interest in rapid recovery and mini incision hip replacement surgery. He led the team that set up the enhanced recovery at the North Hampshire hospital and the Hampshire clinic.

He has been involved and is still involved with research into orthopaedic conditions, especially hip and hip replacement surgery, mini incision and rapid recovery and has published and presented internationally in these areas.

Ever since becoming a consultant he has been involved in teaching and training orthopaedic surgeons. He was an examiner for the National FRCS Orthopaedic exam for the United Kingdom for 10 years and Foundation Programme Director for junior doctors at the North Hampshire hospital for six years. He is still involved in teaching and training.

Although a large portion of his time is spent performing primary hip replacements and revision hip replacements, he has an interest in the knee, performing operations such as arthroscopy, unicompartmental knee replacement and total knee replacement. He also treats hand conditions such as carpal tunnel Dupuytren’s disease and trigger finger.

Mr Stranks is married with two grown-up children and lives outside Basingstoke, he has a wide range of interests including a 1966 Triumph Herald.
