Personal Profile

Mr Gavin Bryce is a General and Upper Gastrointestinal (GI) surgeon who graduated from The University of Glasgow School of Medicine in 2002. He remained in the West of Scotland to complete surgical training during which time he was awarded a research MD having submitted a thesis on peri-operative cardiac risk. He was awarded a Certificate of Completion of Training in General surgery subspecialising in Upper GI surgery in 2013 and was immediately appointed as a Consultant General and Upper GI Surgeon in University Hospital Wishaw.

Within his NHS practice, he has developed a keen subspecialist interest in diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy, ERCP, oesophageal and gastric cancer treatment, assessment of Barrett’s oesophagus, and assessment and treatment of benign Upper GI disorders (including reflux disease and hiatal/diaphragmatic hernias), whilst maintaining a high-volume practice in managing and performing surgery for gallstone disease and abdominal wall hernias.

Mr Bryce has a number of leadership and management roles including Upper GI Cancer Lead for NHS Lanarkshire, Clinical Lead for the Emergency Laparotomy and Laparoscopic Surgery Audit (ELLSA) in University Hospital Wishaw and is the Clinical Lead for the NHS Lanarkshire Cytosponge programme, having been instrumental in bringing cytosponge to NHS Lanarkshire. He currently sits as a member of the West of Scotland Upper GI Cancer Managed Clinical Network Advisory Board and is the Clinical Director of Surgery and Associated Specialties for University Hospital Wishaw.

Mr Bryce is an enthusiastic educator who regularly teaches and is a recognised Clinical Trainer of surgical trainees. He contributes as faculty on the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow (RCPSG) Advanced Skills in Cadaveric Surgery Course, the RCPSG Basic Surgical Skills course, and the Royal College of Surgeons Advanced Trauma Life Support course.

Mr Bryce undertakes all aspects of general surgery including minor operations, abdominal hernia surgery, Upper GI endoscopy, gallbladder surgery, and antireflux surgery, with an emphasis on a laparoscopic approach.
