Dr Kanaganayagam was awarded a national scholarship for intercalating a BSc and was invited to undertake a PhD. During his cardiology PhD he was nominated a national young investigator of the year for his research in stem cell biology whilst still a medical student and went on to publish in the top cardiology journals. After graduating with distinction in specialist study, he went on to take up competitive academic placements at St Thomas’ Hospital and then later as an academic registrar at Imperial College London. He has undertaken rotations at the Royal Brompton Hospital, St Mary’s and Hammersmith Hospital for cardiology specialist training.
He has gone on to present work, and lecture at International conferences, national meetings, training days for junior doctors, surgeons and cardiology registrars.Dr Kanaganayagam sees patients in a general cardiology clinic with chest pain, dizzy spells, breathlessness and palpitations. He is also a lead clinician in heart failure for a large community service under Imperial where he sees patients with breathlessness and/or leg swelling.
With sub-specialist expertise, and European and British accreditation in multi-modality imaging he runs his own valve service, which allows comprehensive assessment, including the use of cardiac MRI, 3D transoeophageal and stress echocardiography when necessary after advanced transthoracic echocardiographic assessment. He helps assess suitability for, and guide transcatheter procedures such as TAVI, PFO closures, ASD closures and mitraclips, in a clinical team.
Dr Kanaganayagam also sees patients for risk assessment when concerned or who have developed chest pain and directly performs non-invasive assessment when suitable with stress testing or CT scanning, and performs invasive coronary angiography when necessary.
