Dr Murphy had his undergraduate training at Southampton University between 1987-1993. He obtained his medical degree and an intercalated BSc in biomedical sciences. He then trained in General Internal Medicine in the Wessex region between 1993-1997 and obtained his MRCP in 1996. He did his specialist training in Gastroenterology and Hepatology in the Wessex region from 1997-2004.
During this time he was awarded a prestigious clinical training fellowship by the Medical Research Council to study his PhD in the field of liver fibrosis between 2000-2003. He was awarded his PhD in 2004. He was appointed as Consultant Gastroenterologist and Hepatologist at the Royal Hampshire County Hospital in Winchester in 2004 and is clinical lead for Endoscopy services in Winchester and also has a practice at Andover War Memorial Hospital.
Dr Murphy has published work in the fields of liver fibrosis and inflammatory bowel disease. He has been local investigator in a number of national clinical trials including Photostent 2, BOSS and ELUCIDATE. He has also recruited patients to the CONSTRUCT trial and Thalidomide trials. He remains involved in teaching trainees in Gastroenterology and medical students from Southampton University.
Dr Murphy is married with three children. He enjoys sailing adventures. He also enjoys spending time with his family walking, cycling, sailing and skiing. He enjoys music and enjoys playing the guitar, piano and drums. He has an interest in renewable energy sources including solar power and biodiesel
