About Frances Hughes

Personal Profile

Miss Hughes qualified from the London Hospital Medical College in 1988 and immediately entered surgical training. She undertook my training at a number of London hospitals, spending some time at centres of excellence in both Japan and Australia, and gained a wide range of experience in general surgery as well as developing expertise in gastrointestinal surgery. She undertook research at the Royal London Hospital in the field of gut motility, and was awarded the degree of Master of Surgery.

She was appointed as Consultant Surgeon in 2000, at Southend Hospital and Royal London Hospital in 2003. She has been Honorary Consultant at University College London since 2016 for the treatment of Oesophagogastric Cancer.

Throughout her career, she has developed expertise in all aspects of abdominal surgery, including surgery of the gallbladder, stomach, oesophagus and intestines and hernias.

She provides expert care in the diagnosis and treatment of surgical conditions of the gastrointestinal system and has many years of experience in undertaking minimal access surgery (keyhole surgery) in patients, aiding the rapid recovery from their operation.

She is a nationally accredited trainer for general and laparoscopic surgery, and is closely involved with the training of surgeons, locally, nationally and internationally.
