Dr Faqir Muhammad is a Consultant Gastroenterologist with extensive experience in gastroenterology, hepatology and general internal medicine. He has worked as a Consultant Gastroenterologist within the NHS since 2005 and has been based at Northampton General Hospital NHS Trust since February 2014. He is on the General Medical Council Specialist Register for Gastroenterology and General Internal Medicine and has developed a reputation for delivering high-quality, patient-centred care through evidence-based practice.

His clinical practice encompasses the diagnosis and management of a broad range of gastrointestinal and liver disorders. He has significant expertise in both outpatient and inpatient gastroenterology, managing patients with complex digestive diseases while providing comprehensive assessment, investigation and treatment plans tailored to individual needs.

A major focus of Dr Muhammad’s practice is gastrointestinal endoscopy. He performs both diagnostic and therapeutic upper and lower gastrointestinal endoscopic procedures, including gastroscopy, colonoscopy, flexible sigmoidoscopy, polypectomy and endoscopic mucosal resection of complex polyps. He obtained Joint Advisory Group (JAG) accreditation in upper gastrointestinal endoscopy, flexible sigmoidoscopy and colonoscopy in 2009 and continues to maintain a high-volume endoscopy practice.

Throughout his consultant career, Dr Muhammad has worked in several major NHS hospitals across England before establishing his long-term practice in Northampton. These appointments have provided extensive experience in managing the full spectrum of gastroenterological and hepatological disorders, including inflammatory bowel disease, chronic liver disease, viral hepatitis, gastrointestinal bleeding, colorectal disease and upper gastrointestinal disorders.

Within his current NHS role, Dr Muhammad undertakes regular outpatient clinics, endoscopy sessions and inpatient ward rounds. He participates in multidisciplinary team meetings covering upper gastrointestinal, lower gastrointestinal and hepatobiliary diseases, working closely with surgeons, radiologists, oncologists, pathologists and specialist nurses to ensure patients receive coordinated, evidence-based care.

Education and training have remained central throughout his career. In addition to supervising gastroenterology trainees and junior doctors, he regularly teaches undergraduate medical students. He has previously held the post of Assistant Professor of Medicine and Gastroenterology, delivering undergraduate teaching, clinical demonstrations and lectures while also contributing to curriculum development and student assessment.

Dr Muhammad is committed to maintaining the highest professional standards through continuous professional development. He regularly attends national and international gastroenterology and endoscopy meetings, with particular interests in therapeutic endoscopy, inflammatory bowel disease, hepatology, colorectal disease and advances in endoscopic techniques. This ongoing education ensures that his clinical practice reflects current evidence and national guidance.

Alongside his clinical work, Dr Muhammad has maintained an active interest in research throughout his career. He has led and contributed to numerous clinical research projects, audits and quality improvement initiatives. His work has been presented at national and international scientific meetings, including the British Society of Gastroenterology, the Irish Society of Gastroenterology and United European Gastroenterology Week. He has also authored and co-authored multiple peer-reviewed publications covering hepatology, endoscopy, inflammatory bowel disease and gastrointestinal disease.

Clinical governance and patient safety are important aspects of his practice. He has led clinical audits evaluating endoscopy services, hepatobiliary stenting and hepatitis C prevalence, using audit findings to support service improvement and enhance patient care.

Dr Muhammad has extensive leadership experience developed through many years of consultant practice. He has supervised multidisciplinary clinical teams, trained junior doctors and endoscopy staff, organised teaching programmes and contributed to departmental management. His collaborative approach enables him to work effectively within multidisciplinary teams while maintaining high standards of patient care.

Outside medicine, Dr Muhammad enjoys swimming, maintaining his fitness through regular gym exercise, reading medical literature and keeping informed about national and international affairs.
