Personal Profile

Prof. Faiz Mumtaz had his postgraduate urological training in London at the Royal Free Hospital and University college London. 

He has over the last 18 years developed a specialist interest in laparoscopic and robotic kidney cancer surgery and has an established high volume surgical practice at the Royal Free Hospital. He routinely performs robotic removal of kidney tumours, reconstruction of obstructed kidneys and removal of kidney stones.  

In addition to his specialist interest in renal surgery he is able to offer assessment and treatment for general urological conditions such as enlargement of prostate gland, elevated PSA, haematuria, testicular cancer, kidney/ureteric stones, urinary tract symptoms, overactive bladder, circumcision, vasectomy and erectile dysfunction. His practice also includes minimally invasive treatments for kidney and ureteric stones with laser.

He offers clinical outpatient’s appointments every Tuesday and Thursday at The Kings Oak and Cavell Hospitals. In addition, he has private practice privileges at the Royal Free Hospital, Princess Grace and Wellington Hospital.

He is also the Director of renal cancer fellowship program at the Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust and external examiner and a supervisor for postgraduate research degrees (MD and PhD). He has trained several fellows in the field of robotic kidney cancer surgery. In addition, he has conducted various international surgical workshops and several successful national meetings on kidney, bladder and prostate cancer over the last 10 years.

Mr Mumtaz also holds a Honorary Associate Professor position at University College London and has a very strong interest in academics and has recently established a dedicated Kidney cancer research laboratory at the Institute of Immunology and Transplantation based at the newly developed Pears Building within the Royal Free Hospital. He has pioneered the development of 3D Artificial Intelligence imaging program for surgical planning of complex kidney tumours to perform robotic/open partial nephrectomy thereby preserving the remaining kidney. He has introduced this program to several high-volume kidney cancer centres nationally leading to grant from the National Institute of Health Research. He also chairs the Kidney cancer research foundation which is actively involved in fundraising.

He is also a member of the British Association of Urological Surgeons and the Royal College of Surgeons (England). He is also the National lead of Societe’ internatinale Urologie representing the British Association of Urological Surgeons. He has published well over 100 articles and a textbook on Urological Emergencies. He has given several invited lectures at both the national and international urological conferences including organised several workshops on laparoscopic and robotic surgery.
