Dr Eslam Heggy is a Fellow of the Faculty of Pain Medicine of the Royal College of Anaesthetists (FFPMRCA). He also holds the European Diploma in Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care, a Doctorate in Anaesthesia, Intensive Care and Pain Medicine, and a Master’s degree in Anaesthesia. He graduated with honours from Cairo University in 2011 and is on the General Medical Council Specialist Register for Anaesthetics.
Dr Heggy is a substantive NHS consultant in Anaesthesia and Chronic Pain Management. His experience spans clinical practice and postgraduate training at Cairo University and several NHS hospitals in the United Kingdom.
His practice encompasses the assessment and management of a broad range of persistent and complex pain conditions. These include neck and back pain, sciatica, nerve pain, musculoskeletal and joint pain, and persistent pain following surgery or injury. He considers both the symptoms themselves and their effect on a person’s mobility, sleep, work, relationships and independence.
Patients may seek his advice when pain has continued despite treatment, when the diagnosis remains uncertain, or when they would like to understand their options more clearly. He also assesses patients for whom surgery is unsuitable because of their health, or where specialist assessment has identified no clear surgical target. He helps these patients explore appropriate options for managing pain and improving function.
Dr Heggy brings together the history, examination findings, relevant investigations and response to previous treatments to assess the factors contributing to pain. He explains his findings in understandable language, including any uncertainty and whether further investigation would help guide care. Patients are encouraged to discuss their concerns and previous experiences, including treatments that have helped or caused difficulties.
His treatment approach combines medical management, rehabilitation and interventional techniques according to the individual clinical situation. Medication review considers whether treatment is helping, whether side effects are limiting its usefulness and whether an alternative approach may be appropriate. He works with other specialists and rehabilitation professionals where their involvement can support the patient’s care.
Dr Heggy performs a range of image-guided pain procedures. Selected examples include
His clinical interests also include neuromodulation. Procedures are considered as part of an individual treatment plan, following discussion of their purpose, expected benefits, alternatives, limitations and risks.
He places particular emphasis on helping patients understand the reasoning behind a recommendation. Where an intervention is appropriate, the discussion includes what improvement might realistically look like and how the response will be assessed. Where another approach is more suitable, he explains the available options and the next steps.
Treatment goals are agreed with each patient and reflect what matters to them. These may include walking more comfortably, returning to valued activities, improving sleep or managing daily responsibilities. Follow-up provides an opportunity to review progress and adjust the plan according to treatment response and changing needs.
Alongside his clinical work, Dr Heggy teaches and supervises doctors in training and is recognised by the General Medical Council as a trainer. He aims for patients to leave their consultation with a better understanding of their pain and an agreed direction for their care.
