About Mr Emad H Aly

Personal Profile

Mr Emad H Aly is a Consultant Colorectal & General Surgeon in Aberdeen Royal Infirmary and Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer for the University of Aberdeen who provides robotic, laparoscopic and open surgery for his patients. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons, the American College of Surgeons and a Fellow of the American Society of Colon & Rectum Surgery. He is a reviewer for several surgical journals (here). He also has many publications (here) in peer reviewed journals & poster presentations in national and international meetings on Colorectal & General Surgery.

Mr Aly has a major interest in medical education and completed a Master’s in Education (MEd) with focus on Educational Leadership & Management. He developed several teaching modules for University of Aberdeen medical students and developed several free to download e-books for medical students and junior doctors. He is also the director of multiple courses for the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. He is a member of the Intercollegiate Examiners’ Board of the Royal Colleges for MRCS & FRCS surgical examinations.

He held the role of Director for Surgical Education for the Association of Surgeons of Great Britain & Ireland (2008-2013) during which he was a key player in developing a Postgraduate Certificate qualification in Medical Education with focus on Surgical Education. He was a member of the founding committee of the Faculty of Surgical Trainers of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. Mr Aly has been as a member of Continuous Education Committee of the American Society of Colon & Rectum Surgery since 2021.

Mr Aly has extensive expertise in educational leadership as well as training & coaching of medical students, junior doctors, trainee surgeons, senior fellows and consultant colleagues. He is a Fellow of the Faculty of Surgical Trainers of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and Associate Member of the Academy of Master Surgical Educators of the American College of Surgeons. He is currently Vice Chair of Continuous Education Committee of the American Society of Colon & Rectum Surgery (2026-2028)
