She continued her specialist training in Paediatric Neurology and Neurodisability in Scotland. Dr Stephen also holds a Postgraduate Diploma in Paediatric Neurodisability from Sheffield Hallam University and has specialist accreditation in Child Neurology from the European Paediatric Neurology Society (EPNS).
Dr Stephen was appointed as a Consultant at the Royal Aberdeen Children’s Hospital (RACH) in 2007. She is currently the Clinical Lead for the North of Scotland Neurology Network (NESCANN).
In addition, she is an Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Aberdeen, where she is actively involved in teaching and training medical students.
Dr Stephen contributes nationally to paediatric neurology through her role with the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (RCPCH) in London, where she works as a Quality Advisor for the Paediatric Neurology CSAC (College Specialist Advisory Committee). She is also the Aberdeen Centre Lead for the British Paediatric Neurology Association (BPNA), helping to coordinate regional training alongside the Glasgow centre.
Dr Stephen is the Clinical Research Champion at the Royal Aberdeen Children’s Hospital. She leads and supports a wide range of academic and commercial clinical research studies.
Her research focuses mainly on epilepsy and headache disorders, where she acts as both Chief Investigator (CI) and Principal Investigator (PI), supported by the local clinical research facility.
With over 18 years of NHS consultant experience, Dr Stephen main clinical areas are in diagnosing and managing neurological conditions in children, including:
Dr Stephen is actively involved in teaching at both local and national levels. Her work includes:
Lecturing and tutoring medical students at the University of Aberdeen
Teaching on national BPNA training courses, including CHaT (Childhood Headache Training) and PET (Paediatric Epilepsy Training)
Dr Stephen is ILAE certified in Basic EEG and paediatric EEG interpretation.
