Personal Profile

Dr Smith trained in medicine at Guys’s and St Thomas’ Hospitals in London and specialised in cardiology at the Manchester Royal Infirmary, and the London Chest Hospital. He was jointly appointed as an NHS consultant in 2008 to Barnet, Chase Farm and The London Chest Hospitals (Barts Health NHS Trust). Dr Smith sees all general cardiology patients but has a special interest in the assessment of chest pain, coronary angiography and percutaneous coronary intervention.

He has sub specialist interest in complex coronary interventional techniques including rotational atherectomy and the minimally invasive treatment of longstanding arterial blockages (chronic total occlusions). He is a recognised national expert in this area, and a European trainer (proctor) for this type of procedure. He participated in the development of the London Chest Hospital’s Heart Attack Centre, now one of the largest services of its kind in the UK. He has a strong commitment to the training and education of future interventional cardiologists and is a Director of the Cardiovascular Training Institute at Barts.

Research interests include Chronic Total Occlusions (CTO) and percutaneous haemodynamic support. When not at work Dr Smith spends as much time as possible with his wife, three sons and daughter. He is passionate about sport. He is a keen cyclist and an avid Manchester United supporter (by birth). When not watching at Old Trafford, he is a touchline Dad supporting his children.
