Dr Shmueli was born in Israel and moved to London in 1969. He studied medicine at Bristol University Medical School, qualifying in 1984 as a junior doctor. Following his qualification, he gained a broad range of clinical experience by working in several hospitals across the UK, including Plymouth, Taunton, Nottingham, and Derby. This early stage of his career helped him develop the practical skills and knowledge that underpin his approach to patient care today.
In 1987, he successfully passed the MRCP (Membership of the Royal Colleges of Physicians of the United Kingdom), which enabled him to take on the role of medical registrar in Peterborough and later Leicester.
Dr Shmueli has a longstanding interest in both Gastroenterology and Diabetes. To further develop his expertise, he completed a Medical Doctorate (MD) in Newcastle, focusing on glucose metabolism in cirrhosis. His commitment to advancing medical knowledge led him to undertake a Medical Research Council clinical fellowship, during which he worked at both Newcastle and Oxford Universities.
This period of research strengthened his understanding of complex metabolic conditions and continues to inform his clinical practice today.
Since joining Northampton General Hospital as a Consultant in 1995, Dr Shmueli has contributed extensively to both patient care and hospital leadership. For five years, he served as Clinical Director of General Medicine and A&E, demonstrating his ability to manage services as well as deliver frontline care.
He now focuses primarily on clinical work and teaching. His day-to-day practice includes:
Dr Shmueli considers himself both a traditional General Physician and a Gastroenterologist. His approach is based on listening carefully to patients, carrying out appropriate examinations, and explaining diagnoses and treatment options in a clear and open way.
He places strong emphasis on ensuring that patients fully understand their condition and the choices available to them. He values shared decision-making and works closely with patients to help them choose the treatment plan that is right for them.
In addition to his clinical work, Dr Shmueli has contributed to medical literature through a number of publications. His book, Irritable Bowel Syndrome – Answers at Your Fingertips (Class Health Publishing), was first published in 2010. It is designed to help patients better understand and manage their condition.
A second edition of the book is available and has been selected by the Reading Well Agency for the Books on Prescription Scheme, supporting patients in accessing reliable and practical health information.
Dr Udi Shmueli combines extensive clinical experience, research expertise, and a strong commitment to patient understanding, ensuring that individuals receive informed, thoughtful, and supportive care.
