He graduated with Honours from the University of Bristol Medical School in 2004 having first completed a degree in Archaeology. His general surgical training, including academic teaching and research roles, was undertaken in Bristol, the South West and South Wales.
He subsequently moved to the Wessex region for his specialist orthopaedic Registrar training, during which time he completed an MSc in Trauma Surgery. Following completion of the training, and award of the FRCS Trauma & Orthopaedics examination, he spent a year on the prestigious British Society for Surgery of The Hand (BSSH) Fellowship at the Queen Elizabeth and Royal Orthopaedic Hospitals in Birmingham. This allowed him to work and study all aspects of hand surgery in an internationally renowned centre.
Mr Avis is one of a minority of Hand Surgeons who have been awarded the British Diploma in Hand surgery and as such he is knowledgeable of the most up to date evidence and surgical techniques on which he bases my decision making.
Mr Avis was appointed as a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at the North Hampshire Hospital in Basingstoke in July 2017 where he practices as a hand, wrist and elbow surgeon. He has a busy elective practice and participate in the on call trauma service. He is actively involved in teaching and research.
Mr Avis is a member of the British Orthopaedic Association and an Associate Member of the BSSH.

He has been Clinical Director for Orthopaedics and is actively involved in teaching and research, both in the UK and overseas.
From a clinical perspective, Mr Avis has a special interest in joint replacement surgery for arthritis of the hand and wrist, for which he teaches surgeons internationally. He has further interest in Dupuytren’s Disease, nerve surgery, such as for carpal tunnel syndrome, tendon surgery and hand and wrist trauma.
