About Mr Donald McArthur

Personal Profile

Mr Donald McArthur is an expert General and Upper GI Surgeon. He was appointed as a consultant in 2015 at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital, Scotland’s largest teaching hospital and Major Trauma Centre. He provides undergraduate and postgraduate teaching as well as regular training sessions for young surgeons at Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow where he is a fellow.  

Mr McArthur has specific expertise in the management of biliary and gallstone disease (laparoscopic cholecystectomy) as well as functional gastrointestinal issues including hiatus hernia, gastro-oesophageal reflux and achalasia. He provides surgical mentorship and training to fellow consultants in hiatus hernia surgery.

He is heavily involved in the management of complex abdominal wall hernias and has been an invited faculty member at international conferences. He has an extensive tertiary practice in the treatment of incisional hernia and complex abdominal wall reconstruction (CAWR).

Mr McArthur sits on the Board of the National Oesophageal Cancer Charity OCHRE having previously been awarded funding from the charity to provide a laser for the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital for the palliation of cancers of the oesophagus and stomach. He is a member of the West of Scotland Upper GI Cancer MDT and is engaged in the diagnosis and management of a range of Upper GI malignancies.  

Mr McArthur undertakes all aspects of General Surgery including minor skin lesion surgery, open and laparoscopic hernia surgery. He is exceptionally experienced in diagnostic and advanced therapeutic endoscopy with a particular interest in the endoscopic palliation of Upper GI cancers.
